With all the hundreds of places that claim to have the ''World's Greatest Burger,'' Matt's Bar is one of only a handful that might be right. Matt's has all the trappings of a great neighborhood bar: well-stocked jukebox, loyal local following, super-friendly staff and cold beer to wash it all down.
What about those hamburgers? They're all delicious, but the real star is the Juicy Lucy -- a cheeseburger with the cheese actually sealed inside the meat. The cheese forms a (very hot) pool of tasty goo inside the burger as it cooks, and you'll do well to heed the posted warnings -- "Fear the Cheese!" -- and wait a few minutes to avoid a messy burn. Matt's serves a few hundred of these legends every week, which explains another posted witticism: ''No ice, no plates ... we blew the budget on napkins.'' The bar is beer only. -- Jon Hilgers

Awsome
Awsome it has actually been some time since I have been to Matts, because I have moved a ways away . I must admit though that I have never forgotten the unique dining experience of the Juicy Lucy. A most Delicious burger, and the only burger that comes with directions on how to eat. All I can say is try it but follow the instructions
Add CommentWho is Matt anyway?? And is he single??
This place is truly a Mpls landmark. Order a JL, fries and a drink then sit back and enjoy but don't ask for ice for your coke or expect posh surroundings, neither exists here - but who cares? This is one of those iconic neighborhood joints your grandparents, folks and friends have all been to. Matt's is well worth the trip to South Minneapolis.
The Nook is good but Matts is better
The Nook has great burgers but so do a lot of places. Matt's is unquestionably, hands down the best. If you have not had a Juicy from Matt's you have not lived. It is worth a flight if you are from out of town.
