Roadhouse. Steakhouse. Call it what you like, if you come here really hungry, you'll be glad you came here really hungry. Having survived the trendification of the Warehouse District and the seemingly endless tearing up/rebuilding of Washington Avenue, J.D. Hoyt's is still looking good and serving some of the best food in the Cities. The upgraded dining room booths and the bar are not plush or sexy, just sleek and shiny wood, like a place designed for 'good eaters' should be. The steaks are a prime attraction, but there is much more to enjoy. Spicy catfish and the signature Cajun pork chops are just a couple of the charcoal grilled favorites here. Your choice from a list of spices and sauces can be added to further pleasure your palate. (Cajun and Jamaican Jerk are free; salsa, bleu cheese and others are $3.) Salads and tasty sides, like killer hash browns and red beans and rice, are offered ala carte and at reasonable prices. Fresh catches are flown in daily for seafood lovers, but the vegetarian will find little beyond a couple of pasta dishes. The Hoyt's wine list, by the glass or bottle, corresponds well with the menu and most pocketbooks. Overall, expect your hunger to disappear, but not your bank account -- prices are in the popular middle range. -- John Sharpe

  • OUTSTANDING ! ! !

I travel all around the country, and because of that, I am able to find some great places to eat in some really great towns. I simply do love food. I'm practically a critic because of how much I appreciate it.
J D Hoyt's is a remarkable restaurant. Pat Montague, the host, treated my colleagues and me like family. He gave us recommendations that were on the money (buddy bowl, cajun hashbrowns, strawberry shortcake on corn bread). He made our dinner just that much more enjoyable.
The service was great; not in your face, but there when you wanted them. We always had our glasses filled in a timely fashion. Everyone was pleasant.
The atmosphere was comfortable. It really felt like an old Chicago local place. It wasn't loud and had plenty of character.
And the best part, the Menu. I decided to come here for their Porkchops and almost had something else. Don't do it. The Porkchops are superb. Seriously.... a must if you like pork. They're about an inch and a half thick and around 15 to 16 ounces, even though the menu states 13oz.
Their blackened catfish and shrimp are amazing. I really just can't rave enough. I hope you'll have the same experience I did, because, this season so far, this beats anywhere I've eaten.
And last, but not least, the price. The service alone is 4 stars, let alone the food, but your wallet sure doesn't feel it at the end of the night. You get more than what your money is worth.
    A+ and Highly recommend.

Last evening we had the pleasure of dining at this fine restaurant. We ordered four different dinners. The strip steak and shrimp combo was excellent with the cajun seasoning. We also had some of the famous chops. A steak and scallop combo and a strip steak. All were excellent. We look forward to a return visit!

Very nice remodeling! You can't go wrong here. Everytime I introduce someone to JD's, they go back. If you eat your whole entree, you are going to have problems so chose the doggie bag, these portions are HUGE! Cajun spices are my favorite . . .you can tell the grill is an old one, you can't replace a seasoned grill for flavor. (Use the valet so you can avoid the classless strip bar next door). don't let that scene deter you from a best dining experience!
