Some food history archives assert the hot dog was invented in the 1800s by New York Germans who figured a frankfurter worked better on a bun than on bread or a non-edible plate -- probably so. But the casual dining delicacy reached its zenith with the advent of the Chicago-style dog, the one with relish, tomatoes, onions, peppers, celery salt, mustard and pickles. Joey D's is one of the few places around here you can find this monster in all it's authentic glory, and it's definitely the top dog on the cafe's menu. Italian roast beef sandwiches, crisp fries, tasty pizzas, and many other varieties of hot dogs (the chili dog is another star) are also available. You can dine well for about the same cost as at a fast food outlet, but bring cash or your checkbook to pay. Take your feast with you on the road, grab a seat inside amid an abundance of Windy City pro sports paraphernalia or hunker down at one of the fair-weather tables on the patio. Here's a hot dog fan's dream come true, and if you're getting hungry while you read this, time's a-wastin'.

Should be on Diners, Dives & Drive-in's

Best Italian Beef in town!! Top it with mozarella and order up a side of chili-cheese fries. Don't be a sissy and eat it with a fork!! Beats all the "juicy lucies" anywhere. Don't wear a tie unless ya want to use it as a napkin.

( southside) 4 my food fix ! ! GO SOX s rite ! ! !Neat place
The atmosphere is a walk-up to order. They don't take credit cards, but have an ATM. The seating is very cozy, not too much is available. But the food tasted great and it was a bargain. I had the barbeque and onion rings and they were tasty. I would recommend this place if you're craving a little homestyle bbq.
Cures the hometown cravings
As a U of M student hailing from Chicago, homesickness can strike pretty often, but is well-remedied by a trip to Joey D's. My favorite is the Italian Beef with mozarella cheese, while my roommate (a Chicago south-sider) prefers the beef with peppers. The food is cheap, the dining isn't fancy, the staff is always willing to please, and while it might not be the real deal, it's as close to Chicago-style food as I've seen anywhere in the Twin Cities. My only gripe: the owners are Cubs' fans. GO SOX!
