The term ''red-blooded American'' takes on new meaning at this North Metro restaurant; rather than a cultural classification, it's the kind of cuisine you can expect. Plenty of thick steaks, rare or otherwise, and other American meaty favorites are served with all the trimmings in a slightly upscale roadhouse atmosphere -- think crystal and comfy seating mixed with taxidermy. Chops, seafood and chicken are available, but traditional steak cuts are the stars, with prices ranging from $24 for a New York Strip to $30 for a porterhouse or filet mignon. And diners who like their meals to have a wilder flavor will enjoy Red Oak's weekly game entree, which may be venison, pheasant or some other formerly feral fauna. Tasty appetizers and sides (like great hash browns) are as un-trendy as the rest of the menu, and a big selection of wines and cocktails is available from the friendly, old school barkeeps and servers. Walk-ins are welcome, but Lino Lakes isn't exactly just around the corner for most of us, so consider reservations. Also, make a note to ask about the scores of recording artist photos plastering the walls (the answer may surprise you). -- John Sharpe

  • Rip-off! No business sense.

    Review rating : 2out of 5   briangilbertson - 02/23/2008

If watching the owner pace around in a nice suit with his hair did turns you on and you have no regards for consistent food quality and value...then here's your place! ....and you just might have the restaurant to yourself for the evening. Their service is superb but their business sense is definitely lacking. The price of your steak will skyrocket if you want anything on it.....and rumor has it that they're not USDA Choice Steaks, which wouldn't cost them much considering the portions.
It should be a clear sign of what to expect when the place is rarely open, in fact I visited most recently on a Friday night at 11pm for a drink at the bar and they were closed...isn't that prime-time for bars?....and you can forget dinner on your day of relaxation...they're closed all-day!
Buyer beware!...that awesome chef pictured on their website doesn't even work there.....he was last seen washing cars at the Holiday Stationstore.

Sorry I cannot give this restaurant a good rating. The food portions were very small and it was quite pricey. I didn't find it very good. Will not go there again.

  • Excellent for All

Not located downtown but every bit a downtown operation. Food is top shelf as is the service. The wild game choices have always been among the best prepared and presented I have enjoyed in any restaurant. Tom is doing an excellent job and deserves your visit.

  • Worth the drive

    Review rating : 4out of 5   rozary33 - 02/22/2007

The Red Oak is "off the beaten track" but well worth going the distance for. The atmosphere is calming...the service above par and the food done beyond expectations. The menu is small but tight . I will definitely make the drive again.
