If you're a chicken lover in Metro Detroit, you know about Chicken Shack -- or "The Shack," as the regulars like to call it. Formed in 1956 around founder John Sobeck's broasted chicken recipe, Chicken Shack has grown into quite the carryout empire. Still family run, Chicken Shack is, of course, best known for it's broasted chicken (broasting, by the way, is a high pressure cooking method that's supposedly less greasy than frying). However, a number of other Shack items can arguably give the chicken a run for its money, including the super popular Shack potatoes (in a league of their own), pork chop dinners, and big slabs of barbecued ribs. Warren is the original home of Chicken Shack; today there are 19 locations throughout the area.

Delicious, but expensive
The food is great, but the review is incorrect. The first main, sit-down restaurant is in Warren, MI, but the first two restaurants were in Royal Oak, MI. One of the Royal Oak restaurants was at the end of the street from my grandmother's house and my dad remembers it as a teenager. The Warren restaurant was 1/2 mile from the house I grew up in and it didn't open until I was in high school.
Another correction, the potatoes are called "broasteds", no one but the writer calls them "Shack potatoes"... The broasted potatoes are left with the peels intact, cut into chunks, broasted, and then dabbed with a butter/salt/pepper sauce once they are put on a plate to be served. Recently however, their potatoes have changed, and not for the good. They appear to be using a different type of potato, cutting them into smaller pieces, not using as much of the butter/salt/pepper sauce, and maybe it's not butter anymore (not sure - it is not the same though).
The coleslaw is sweet and oh, so good. The ribs are always excellent.
The food is great, but expect to pay dearly for it. I'm sure most of the food is not good for your heart, but as a special treat, it's great.
The only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5 rating is due to price and the recent changes to the broasted potatoes.Add Commentsmh
