It's no secret that Detroit loves its Buddy's. In 1944, Gus Guerra's signature establishment emerged from the shadow of prohibition -- it's said to have existed as a blind pig -- at Six Mile and Conant, where they began offering Sicilian-style deep dish pizza to the public. The years passed, and so did the ownership of Buddy's store and recipe. More than half a century later, Buddy's still makes the pizza to which all others are compared in metro Detroit. With exclusively-produced Wisconsin cheese and dough that's made fresh daily, many will argue that Buddy's can't be beat. They'll tell you it's true whether you're craving a classic pie with sausage and pepperoni, or their best-in-class barbecue chicken creation.

Add CommentOh Buddy's ... I miss you!
I was born and raised in Detroit and, as a child, spent many Capucian Kitchen fundraisers at Buddy's Pizza on Conant with my grandfather, Paul Sanderson, who headed the charity drive. No other pizza can hold a candle to Buddy's. When I got older, I worked at the Farmington Hills store as a waitress; I can still smell the "test" pizza running through the oven in the mornings - breakfast! Now, relocated in California, I crave Buddy's and require all visitors to carry a "half bake" on the plane when they come out this way -- a pizza and a Faygo is your ticket to a wonderful visit with me!

mrjordan44: YOU are so right! I had forgotten it, it has been a while since I have been.. But, yes! Pizza is awesome. So is the ambience-the old wine bottles on the wall. I am glad you brought that back to MY attention. I moved out-of-state. I"ll be going back. Even tho I live practically across the way to Cloverleaf! It beasts em all. Buddies was good; when it was just the single lone bar, now it is lacking.
