Without a doubt, this is one of the swankiest Chinese restaurants in the metro Detroit area. Beautifully appointed decor and exquisite cuisine explain the long waits and hard-to-get weekend reservations. The odds are high that you'll see local celebs dining here, but please don't disturb them while they're eating. If you're new to the concept, order the sake sampler. You may get a little tipsy, but at least it'll be clear which are your favorites for next time.

House specialties (referred to as ''Nu Asian fusion'' dishes) include pine nut chicken, sizzling peppered tuna and ''Seafood in Taro's Nest.'' The latter features shrimp scallops, lobster and just about every Chinese veggie you can think of, and many you can't. Odd little additions at the end of the menu include a hamburger and club sandwich. Almost seems like a crime when the Chinese fare here is hard to beat.

    It can be a strange place for the service - during lunch time, if you dine in, you can only order from the lunch menu, but if you take out during lunchtime you can order from the lunch AND dinner menu. Also, at dinnertime they charge for rice. That is like going to an Italian restaurant and charging for the pasta. The found is great and the presentation is always great, I just don't believe they are customer focused

    This is the only place I know where you can take someone for Chinese food and impress them with your choice in restaurants at the same time.

    Awesome dishes and very creative. Wednesday nights are great for the younger crowd. I have been coming to this place when it was a "nobody." Ask for Nancy - she a fantastic waitress. Here suggestions are always perfect.

    Great New-Yorky atmosphere. Excellent sushi, fried-rice, and many many other items on the menu. Always a blast at Mon Jin Lau. High-Class Chineese food.

    I can think of at least a dozen in the area that are better on taste, price and service. the first time it was bad, then went with friends for the second time, let me just say this, won't be a third. If you want really great food and service explore windsor

    Ok, not in Detroit but great food. Have been going there for at least 20 years. Yes, a tad on the pricey side. Yes, a tad on the noisy side. But there's a ton of life inside Mon Jin Lau and we love it. Best calamari on the freakin' planet. Have never -- and have probably eaten there over 100 times -- had crappy service so not sure what others could be referring to.
