The best burgers in the Metro Detroit area are no longer a secret. The Redcoat has been serving up a low-fat, high-taste burger crafted from Piedmontese beef for years, and the rest of the world is just catching up. Once you get past the almost scary red-tinted lighting scheme and the bizarre mannequin clad in a redcoat uniform, settle in and enjoy one of these bunned delights with just about any topping you desire. They're a tad pricier than the Redcoat's original half-pound choice beef burger, but worth every penny. If red meat isn't your game, there are plenty of Brit-inspired nibbles to choose from, including fish and chips and prime rib served with surprisingly tasty Yorkshire pudding. This interpretation of British-inspired dining has been a Woodward Avenue corridor mainstay since the 1970s, and it wouldn't be right any other way.

  • Red Coat beats all

The lower fat Piedmontese burger? No way, give us the plain old-time Red Coat burger every time. When we hanker for a fab burger, great onions rings - low fat is a yawn, y'dig?

  • Best Burger Ever

    Review rating : 5out of 5   MichiganGuy005 - 06/07/2008

The Red Coat Tavern has the best burger I've ever tasted, time after time after time. The onion rings are phenomenal, too. The atmosphere is great there, the service is excellent, goes beyond just an eating experience. Everything about The Red Coat Tavern is stellar.

  • Get there early

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Sbsmi - 06/06/2008

The food is excellent, especially the burgers. Growing up, my Dad owned a farm and cattle feeding was the business. I love beef and consider myself a connoisseur of good beef. There are really very few places that serve truly outstanding burgers and Redcoat is one of them. You won't be sorry!

  • The BEST Burgers!!!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Jeph Ishy - 05/31/2008

Don't bother paying the extra $$$ for the Piedmontese unless you're watching your figure. The regular burger meat is where its at. Get it with bacon, gouda, & burnt onions. You'll be thanking me. That combo cannot be beat! And if you don't feel like waiting just do call ahead seating. It will cut down your wait time by 50% or more!

  • Too busy!

    Review rating : 4out of 5   Cantillon1 - 05/30/2008

We've been eating burgers here since the 1970's when you received a silver dollar as part of your change after paying the check. We just can't get a table anymore, but have fond memories.

  • Best burger, clam chowder, O rings

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Carlthinks - 05/27/2008

I've never tried the Piedmont beef, I always go for the regular cheeseburger.
The clam chowder is also the best in the city,
and so are the onion rings.
But to borrow a quote from Yogi Berra, nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded. Go early or late or do carry-out or be prepared to wait.
