With its glazed tile exterior and '50s diner vibe inside, family-owned Bates Hamburgers is a Detroit-area tradition. If it weren't, it wouldn't be constantly filled with patrons. Tiny, 90-cent burgers and thick, rich milkshakes are its forte. Juice from the greasy spoon's burgers runs off the meat like a faucet, providing for a messy answer to a fast-food craving. The french fries are crisp and salty, the ideal counterpart to the juicy burgers. Besides their '50s-style counter service, Bates locations feature a walk-up window, similar to the Rally's chain. There's basically nothing for the heart-healthy bunch on this menu, and that's not a bad thing.

Loyal for 50 years
FF 49 - 06/13/2008Started going to Bates 50 years ago, when I was 9. Nothing has changed. I would walk from my house which was about 1/2 away and sit by the window to eat. I now live near Grand Rapids and every time I am within 20 miles of Bates I return for 6 cheeseburgers to go. They never make it for the full 2 hour drive back home. GOT TO LOVE BATES

MSWEET - 06/06/2008How can you have Bates on your list, and not have Green's Hamburgers, on 10 mile & orchard Lake? Best sliders for over 50 years ! Bates are great, Green's are excellent!
