The rebirth in Corktown, Detroit's oldest neighborhood, continues in the shadows of the empty old Tiger Stadium with this new (it opened mid-September 2005) and dynamic barbecue joint. Some of the hundred-year-old buildings along Michigan Avenue are getting a facelift and the owners of Slows have tricked theirs out perfectly (look for the maroon-colored exterior), with sky-high ceilings, exposed brick, copper and wood appointments. Aesthetics aside, the menu speaks for itself. Slows name refers to the slow cooking movement, where food is, as the name implies, cooked slowly with low temps and that distinct wood smoke. While the barbecue standards like ribs, chicken and pulled pork are done to unspeakably perfect proportions here (as are the sides like greens, macaroni and cheese, and the delightfully moist corn bread), but other keen elements like the lean and tasty duck sausage are righteously tempting. Custom desserts and a bar with more than 20 taps? The only thing missing is your own personalized couch to take a nap.

The Ribs and Fish are the best in town. The staff is GREAT. I love everything about this place. Location is on M-59 in White Lake. Hope you all will give it a try, you will go back........

  • Food is good, attitudes r bad!

    Review rating : 3out of 5   gibby30 - 02/28/2008

Food is worth the visit. Be prepared to be treated like you are a bother. Haven't experienced attitude like this before in any restaurant. Split plate charge is robbery @ $2.

  • Bad service and attitude

Boy, how the mighty have fallen. We've been regulars at Slows almost since the inception, but no more. The service has always been borderline nasty, but we were willing to overlook that for the delicious food. Unfortunately, the food is starting to go downhill, too. What used to be a pound of brisket is now a half pound of brisket and a half pound of fat. Piping hot macaroni and cheese is now lukewarm at best. But the worst is the wait staff. They are so unfriendly, you wonder why they went into the restaurant profession. Any recommendations on a new BBQ joint?

  • $2.00 Split plate charge

    Review rating : 2out of 5   vcislo - 06/10/2007

My husband and I went to Slow's for dinner, We had been before and liked the BBQ. We are not big eaters and do not like leftovers, so we typically order an appetizer, split a large meal and then indulge in a dessert. Being 5 months pregnant we only ordered sodas instead of cocktails which also kept the tab low. When they brought us our check, it had a $2.00 line item for split plate. I would not have been so irate had they actually split the plate. We ordered the sample bbq dinner and it came on one plate with the intent for us to split it ourselves. This fee was not only excessive, but completely unnecessary since the only cost to them was to wash an extra plate! We won't be going back. The brisket was also very fatty and the food not as good as we remembered.

  • Best brisket ever!!

Wanted to try somewhere different for a birthday dinner and everybody in our party thought Slow's was great!! Whenever I want to go out for BBQ, I will go to Slow's. I used to think Famous Daves was good, but Slows gets my business now!

  • Best BBQ in town

    Review rating : 5out of 5   sprtntroy - 09/18/2006

I have been to Slow's several times and have had excellent food each time. The brisket is the best I have ever had, the pulled pork is great and the ribs are decent (have had better, but still good). The sides are great, with the mac & cheese, cornbread, apple sauce, and baked beans being my favorite.

Tremendous beer selection as well. The only negative is that the service is sometimes slow, which means slow turnover of tables. Looking forward to the outdoor patio, which seems to be near completion.

The food (exceptional), the atmosphere (awesome) and the price (a bargain) best describes it.
