Detroit is littered with coney dog joints, but the real conossieurs know to head downtown to Lafayette Coney Island. The narrow hole-in-the-wall has lightening-fast service and so-good-you-know-they're-bad coney dogs, with plenty of chili and plenty of pork; the chili cheese fries come with liberal amounts of real shredded cheese. The waitstaff, bedecked in white aprons and triangle hats, wave you in from the street and shout your order to the kitchen. You'll leave with a full belly and a reminder of what makes Detroit unique. So swing by on your lunch break or after a late night out and for less than $5, order a coney, fries and a Coke and see what the low-carb fanatics are missing.

    AS A 7 YEAR OLD WAS MY FIRST TRIP ... THROUGH THE YEARS TOOK MY BUDDIES FROM BENTLEY HS TO LAFAYETTE'S AND GOT THEM HOOKED.... WORKED FOR FORDS IN LIVONIA..WOULD DRIVE DOWNTOWN FOR ATLEASE A WEEKLY FIX. 8/2008 WAS LEAVING DETROIT BACK TO ATLANTA. HAD TO STOP FOR MY 4 CONEY FIX. WAS TALKING TO MY COUNTER MAN.. I'VE SEEN YOU HERE FOR A LONG TIME... HE SAID "35 YEARS". I REMEMBER WHEN THE PLACE WAS YET TO BE EXPANDED...     i live in las vegas and when i get back to detroit the first place after i hit the airport i stop at lafayette for two coneys, if vegas had coneys half as good i be happy, but not here.

    When we're in Bonita Springs/Naples Florida, we dine on Lafayette Coney Island chili flown in daily to our local "coney" joint! What a treat!

    I' started going to Lafayette as a kid after Red Wings games at Olympia. My Dad and I lunched at Lafayette when I was a student at WSU. I closed bars and made my way to Lafayette before going home as a young adult. I've introduced my daughters, my grandson and manhy foreign exchange students to this Detroit Tradition. ALL agree, Lafayette is the ONLY true coney.

    I have had the pleasure of eating there at 3am and the service was very fast and the food was as expected. . . greasy and good. Strange looking building though, but friendly waitstaff.
