Located in a former Ponderosa, El Chico has disguised its steakhouse roots with attractive paintings of Mexican scenes, colorful wall hangings and South-of-the-Border music. There are plenty of places to sit, including a huge gap in the middle of the restaurant where the salad bar once resided. Start off with the huge cocktail menu: massive margaritas, daiquiris, Cuervo concoctions, DosXX beer, among more standard libations. Although not quite encyclopedic, the menu covers most bases, with 10 or so combination dinners (tacos, burritos, chimchangas, etc), house specialties, fajitas, steak and chicken dishes, and vegetarian combos. Among the more interesting mixtures are a quesadilla fajita (filled with steak and cheese and covered with nacho sauce) and a California choice (shrimp, chicken, and vegetables topped with cheese). Most plate dinners are accompanied by rice, beans and/or salad. Desserts are bountiful too, including sopapillas, flan, fried ice cream and a banana burrito. -- Sandra Gurvis
