Sometimes, it's not just about the coffee. A great cup of joe requires the proper atmosphere in which to drink it and Mayorga Cafe delivers. This luxurious coffeehouse features a vast space that's warm and inviting with overstuffed leather couches and chairs, and a colorful decor. The walls serve as a rotating art exhibit featuring one local artist every six weeks. There's reserved space for children with small tables and chairs and a few toys, as well as a Community Room, with wireless Internet and space for live music.

Mayorga's passion for the coffee bean also shines through. Imported from South America and roasted right here in Silver Spring, Mayorga's coffee is rich and robust. It's also environmentally-friendly. Martin Mayorga, owner of the cafe, only buys "bird-friendly" beans, which means they were grown on small farms with no pesticides and without destroying any trees or bird habitats. Martin boasts that his beans are grown, picked, roasted and ground all by hand. Still, you don't have to love coffee to love Mayorga Cafe. You'll find a menu of sandwiches, sides, pastries, plus beer, wine, and some lip-smackin' good margaritas that go very well with the Saturday night live jazz. -- Jamy Bond

  • Rough mornings at Mayorga Caf

    Review rating : 1out of 5   kolkoreh - 03/02/2007

I have visited the café about five times in last few months. While it has the making of a great place the crux of it is that at best the experience is tolerable. The service part is consistently below standard. I am all for young employees (students?), but when this policy translates to a culture of indifference inattentiveness and outright rudeness that’s where I draw the line. Two days ago was the culmination of the sub standard service. I was asking for more details about the new (in Mayorga) option for an egg sandwich in the morning (week day!). The make shift sign was hard to read., The woman at the cashiers was not compassionate. To my amazement she rolled her eyes and quickly mumbled something about the new offering. I guessed something benign and prayed for the best. It was not meant to be. Half an hour later, there are still about the same ten people in the café, but no visible service. After reminding myself that ten minutes earlier I have already asked about the status of my order (another mumble), I decided to now attempt an inquiry about the root of the problem. “A new person in the kitchen” was the answer. No apology, no explanation as to why I was not informed about this or how much longer I would have to wait.
At that point I decided to cut my loses and give up on the egg sandwich experience (their coffee was good though). The money was given back, but not before the manager who did not even look at me (not to mention asking for details or apologizing) allowed the transaction. I complained about the poor quality of the service, still no reaction. Had it been a one time experience I could have called it a fluke. But after about five times of indifferent, forgetful, and unreasonably slow service (given the number of customers) you have to see a trend. BTW, management was not responsive on another occasion to lower a particularly loud music. (at 9am). So much for customer oriented service.

  • very nice, spacious coffeeshop

When I walked in, I must say that I was less than impressed. The vast interior is noticeably dark, with adequate lighting only on the street side of the gargantuan coffeeshop. Nonetheless, it's quite cozy, especially when seated at the tall glass tables near the windows. The view of the street allows you to see trains and the metro as they pass, which reminds me of home (the Midwest). My drink (I ordered a Skim Vanilla Chai) was fantastic, and the wireless is very fast. Despite the intermittently loud children (Sat morning), I think Mayorga is great. Definitely needs a face-lift though, as portions are "in repair" and appear to have been that way for quite some time. Additionally, there's free valet parking since the parking lot is being repaired, which is nice, though somewhat bizzare (given that it's a coffeeshop and not a fancy restaurant).
