Mornings of Bisquick breakfasts pale in comparison after a visit to the Original Pancake House. With more than 15 types of pancakes -- from buckwheat to buttermilk to blueberry -- it's little surprise that lines begin to form in the early morning hours and stick around well into the afternoon at this restaurant on heavily-traveled Rockville Pike. Using recipes from around the world, the Original Pancake House seems much more like a mom-and-pop shop than a successful national chain with more than 90 pancake houses in 24 states in the U.S.

And while the name just mentions pancakes, the griddle here serves up much more. Waffles, crepes and omelets that are big enough to feed a family of four are available for those who aren't flapjack fans. But it really is the pancakes that this restaurant sells like, well, hotcakes. Slide into a booth and order up the behemoth Dutch Baby, a puffy delight dusted with powdered sugar and served with fresh lemon and whipped butter. There's a pile of pancakes for all tastes, whether you prefer tiny silver-dollar dollops or pancakes peppered with real bits of bacon. Juice, coffee and sides of bacon and sausage help round out your meal.

  • OMG...These PANCAKES are the BEST!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ALCORN1871 - 05/30/2008

I have to drive 10 miles plus withstand the 15-20 min. wait just to get these wonderful pancakes.

Plus if you like bacon...NOBODY does it better. It's thick and crispy every time.

The long lines are a testament to the great food. I just wish they would open up a shop in the Gaithersburg/Germantown area.

  • Quality is Worth the wait...

    Review rating : 4out of 5   RBSTOO - 05/30/2008

Yes, there's a wait. Yes, it can be noisy. Yes, some servers are better than others. BUT-- Something for everyone on the menu. And it's not hard to be pleased. Fresh OJ, REAL maple syrup, buckwheat, pecans, choc. chips...real bananas, strawberries, apples. Not syrupy fruit sludge. Wonderful concoctions with quality ingredients. The bacon is the best -- thick and smokey. The coffee is good, too. You get what you pay for and/or wait for and NO pancake house or any place that even serves pancakes can compare with OHOP. If you don't want to wait, then go get a bagel somewhere. Some people are so cranky in the morning they SHOULDN'T go out for breakfast! Bethesda and Arlington locations, too.

  • Fugedaboutit.

    Review rating : 1out of 5   gunshine - 05/02/2007

You can't make a reservation to be seated outside so you'll be seated in the dank inside while "friends" are seated outside. That plus the abysmyl and chaotic menu and service is a reason to fugedaboutit, dear reader. Too bad. Eat at the museum restaurant or better yet, bring a picnic.

  • excellent food, long waits

    Review rating : 4out of 5   hughk - 04/27/2007

I've been many times, and always enjoy the food. Service is so-so, and the lines are often long on weekends. Their crepes are the best around, and portion sizes for all meals are good.

  • We'll never go back

    Review rating : 1out of 5   dsr652 - 02/19/2007

We cannot believe this place is #1!! It is loud, disorganized and greasy. The service was just terrible. I've had better potato pancakes from the freezer section of the grocery store. Our coffees were not refilled unless we flagged a waitperson down. It was: Here's your food - here's your check - now eat and get out. We'll never go back.

  • Just Okay

    Review rating : 2out of 5   carlwduggersr - 02/15/2007

Overpriced for what you get but not bad food. The better alternative is Linda's Cafe on 29 in Arlington, it didn't even make the list but I'll put their Three Deuces breakfast meal against any other in the area in terms of price and quality of food. The servers are highly personable as well.

  • Number 1? No WAY

    Review rating : 1out of 5   dwest1023 - 01/29/2007

I love pancakes, and the ones I got here were terrible. If you want good breakfast, go to the Siver Diner. They know how to make pancakes!

  • Poor service and terrible food

    Review rating : 1out of 5   tedthehandyman - 01/05/2007

McDonalds is a whole lot better, and I mean food and service. The Eggs were cold, my potato pancakes were more oil then potato, rude manager when I commented about this. Dont waste your time.

  • Great food- Gret Portions... GREAT VALUE

    Review rating : 5out of 5   jrhalling - 03/02/2005

Forget IHOP - OPH is THE place for a really good breakfast. HUGE portions, really good food and a LARGE menu.
If you get a chance - pick 1 of the 3 DC area locations.
    ENJOY!
