The repetitious thwacks of wooden crab hammers at work helps drown out the din of takeoffs and landings at nearby BWI Airport (and the occasional off-key karaoke tune from the adjoining bar). Keep a pitcher of cold beer nearby -- Gunning's hard-shell seasoning will set your mouth aflame, though the combination of the brew and tender, sweet crab morsels helps cut the heat.

Want to pass as a real Marylander, even if you're an out-of-town novice? Ask for a side of the seasoning and dip your bounty into it. A seven-ounce crab cake is enough for two meals, while the fried hard crab -- lump crabmeat stuffed into a steamed hard crab, battered and deep-fried -- looks like something that might do battle with Godzilla over Tokyo.

Not to be confused with a restaurant of the same name in Brooklyn, this location is owned by the third generation of the other restaurant's founders. They sold the other location a dozen years ago and took their recipes to an unassuming strip mall in Hanover. And who says you can't take it with you? Gunning's will sell you Maryland crab and cream of crab soups by the gallon for takeout. -- Pete Kerzel

    I have been a frequent customer to Gunnings for years. My parents followed the real owners from Brooklyn to Hanover, same great food. Love the crabs, consistantly the best. (Some feel like they have rocks in them) And their seasoning is by far the best, a family secret I would like to know. As far as the rest of the menu, amazing crabcakes, full of real jumbo lumps. Much better than local rivals GM and Olive Grove, by far. Great place to stop by with out of town guests who want a real Baltimore atmosphere and real Maryland seafood. (Just so helps its so close to the airport!) Servers and staff are always very accomodating, even for very large parties and crabfeast. Gotta try the Friend Green Pepper Rings, topped with powdered suger, sounds strange but a must try. And the Chicken fingers are the best I think I've ever had, REAL BREAST MEAT!

    This restaurant sets the standards when it comes to seafood! The crab cake are second to none. We have searched high & low to find great seafood and finally the search is over.

    I have had crabs from all over and Gunning's are by far the greatest.

    Then food deserves a four star rating but the restaurant portion isn't the cleanest and the bar next to it results in a smoke filled atmosphere in the restaurant part. And bar customers get priority over restaurant customers. Good for drinkers but not good for anyone or any group that doesn't drink or smoke.

    WE HAVE OUT OF TOWN GUEST FROM ALL OVER. WE EAT AT ONE PLACE, AND ONE PLACE ONLY. STRAIGHT TO THE CRABMANS PLATTER AT GUNNINGS. TOO MUCH FOR ONE SITTING AND YUMMY. WE GET CALLS TELLING US TO FED-EX THE PLATTER THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

    I go here when everI can get a chance. Always a great meal with good service. Quality is what is all about--not like up the street where quantity rules but the food stinks (tb2)

    This place has the best cream of crab soup I have ever tasted!! The rest of the menu is O.K. at best.
