I just experienced Ramshead for the first time last night beginning at 7:30 p.m. Ramshead ON Stage is truly one of the best venues to experience live jazz. I have patronized jazz venues from coast to coast and in between. Usually the places are much smaller and they sit you on top of each other. Now it is close, but it is better spacing then, lets say a Blues Alley or a La Va Le. However I cannot say much that I found complimentary about Ramshead Tavern. When you are driving in to Annapolis at night there is no sense that the first parking garage facility you see after Ramshead is the one referred to in the marketing material. The materials call it by name, but I did not see that name, so I ended up at the Hillerman or Hillman garage. Upon pulling in I ask the lot attendant if this was the parking for Ramshead to which she replied, yes. When I presented my stub for validation, our server advised me that they did not validate for that garage. Upon leaving the lot attendant showed me ticket stubs with Ramshead Tavern validation stickers. I showed her my receipt from dinner and the show and she only charged me $2.00 for parking. Parking however was suppose to be free withe package.

Any way I had sent my significant other in so she could make sure we did not lose our reservation for dinner while I looked for a place to park. The hostess was efficient. The service was slow and although I had purchased tickets to a show and dinner I had to remind them to bring me my tickets. I ordered the beer battered shrimp appetizer and the jambalaya. My lady had the Spicy Sam. She was very pleased with her dish. The shrimp in the beer battered shrimp and the jambalaya was not very fresh. You know when it has that "taste." but has not gone completely bad? My lady's entree was served less than thirty (30) seconds after her salad was served. When I commented on this, I was asked would I prefer that it sit under a warming light. I responded that I would prefer that it be served in a professional manner, not so the entree gets cold while she is eating her salad. To which the young lady said, "I am just the food runner, take it up with your waitress." Then why was she commenting in the first place?

The jambalaya seemed put together, as if he just threw some meat on a bed of tomato infused rice and added some garnishment. There was no spiciness and the 5 pieces of sausage were cold and just thrown on top. I was partly there in celebration of a major business accomplishment. Upon ordering the Freixenet (NOT BECAUSE I WANTED TO BUT THERE WERE ONLY TWO CHOICES AND I MERELY WANTED A GLASS SINCE I HAD TO DRIVE BACK TO THE HOTEL) the server pointedly differed with my pronunciation and informed me that at 9:00 p.m. on a Saturday night the establishment had run out of clean champagne glasses. The use of the back way to the On Stage part was a plus because we did not have to stand in the rain to go listen to the music, however we were informed that the creme brulee cheesecake was no longer a dessert item. Do you think the considerate thing would have been to redact that item from the menu? I do not know about anyone else but it is not a positive feeling to decide on something to have, just to be told it is not available.

And then there's the bar. That is where we were sent to obtain our complimentary beers. The server was excellent and the beer was pretty good. But you need to change that process and have the beers served while enjoying the show. I am a fifty-four year old professional. I do not hang out with twenty year olds, particularly twenty-somethings who are drunk and rowdy. There was the screaming for the football games and constantly having my space invaded while I sat at the bar trying to enjoy your brew to the point that I stood up rather than have a confrontation with the drunk young man who could not stand up straight and kept bumping into me without saying excuse me.

The opportunity to obtain autographs after the show was very much appreciated. However the pricing on the CD's were outrageous. Euge Groove's latest CD which came out in 2007 is available on line for $12.97 and maybe less. It was being sold at Ramshead for $22.95. Having just spent almost $400.00 on gas, hotel room, dinner, dessert, drinks and a show and you would think that you might show your appreciation by not inflating the price of the CD by nearly 100 %.

I may be back for the music, but I do not see me buying the whole package again.
