Considered by many to be one of the best (and certainly one of the busiest) Chinese restaurants in Boston, Grand Chau Chow is the big brother of Chau Chow Seafood across the street. The name is derived from the Chau Chow people of Swatow, a city in the Canton province of China, and a cuisine Grand Chau Chow specializes in. It's a genre that's popular here in Boston; fans come from all over to sample the seafood, fashioned from both the typical (shrimp, squid, clams) and the unusual (abalone, shark's fin). There are also plenty of noodles, soups and meat dishes for those who would prefer to stay out of the ocean.
If you have the heart, you can watch your dinner swimming around in large fish tanks around the restaurant, or perhaps just go for a nice veggie dish. Service can be rushed at times, but don't be afraid to relax and order course by course to ensure a well-timed dining experience.

Best Chinese Restaurant ever
It's great, and it's real chinese food.
You can know it, 'cause there are many chinese people eating there.

I came to know the Chau Chua restaurant in the late 80's. If I had to choose one food to eat for every meal this is the place. Favorite dish is shrimp in shell on bed of jalipeno peppers and lettace (from the asian menu only). Enjoy!

beef is as good as some seafood dishes but mahogany clams w/black bean sauce is the best

I have to say, this place has really gone downhill over the past few years. It's become very hit or miss, and I have to say the bathrooms are indescribably filthy. Not a good thing in a Chinese restaurant.

dingy, depressing atmoshphere, perfunctory service-lackluster-have enjoyed some entrees espec. clams in black bean sauce- rest is way overrated
Kim D.'s Review

The best food I ever had. Management is great. Waiters could be more pleasant.
Eric Marion's Review

I eat here weekly; no other restaurant in Chinatown compares to the Grand Chau's excellent food and clean, uncluttered atmosphere.
David Drucker's Review

I love this place for great Hong Kong style seafood, where the waiters have the food on the table before you even order it (I guess they want turnover). Order the fish, lobster, crab, shrimp, chinese broccoli with garlic sauce, its all great. Not the most comfortable meal but excellent place nonetheless.
