If long lines are a testament to good food, the China Pearl in Chinatown cannot be overlooked, especially during its midday rush for Dim Sum. During peak weekend brunches, the wait can be up to an hour for the exotic experience, though don't be discouraged -- the line moves rather quickly.
China Pearl is a bit offbeat and funky; half the fun of visiting is pure anticipation, between waiting in line with friends, walking the long staircase, and finally reaching the gaudy red and gold dining room to be immersed in the hustle and bustle of waitstaff wheeling metal carts stacked high with exotic dishes and bamboo steamers that contain a variety of dumplings filled with pork, seafood, and veggies. This is a great way to sample a variety of dishes very quickly and at reasonable prices (typically $2 to $6 an item). After the Dim Sum rush, it's on to dinner, and the China Pearl settles down just a tad offering a full menu of meat, seafood, and vegetarian-based Chinese entrees, including favorites such as General Gau's Chicken and Lobster Chinese Style, along with a wide range of alcoholic beverages to go with.

Not one of Bostons Best

A friend and I ate there a year ago and the food was very plain. It was flavorless and came to the table almost cold. While the meats and veggies were at least tolerable the seafood was just terrible. I'd heard good things about the place but was terribly disappointed.
Add CommentA Rare Treat!
Some of the finest soups I have tasted in any Chinese restaurant stateside: Abalone, birdsnest & shark fin being the most superb. The Pearl's Royal Imperial egg roll is a meal in itself, over-sized, over-stuffed and loaded with mostly meat such as crab, chicken & shrimp. The only vegetable matter in these is some kind of delectable mushroom. We travel 50 miles just for these egg rolls. They also make the usual egg roll but we never get it there any more now that we have been spoiled with the Imperial egg roll
Yes, China Pearl is out of the way on the second level with a broad, two flight staircase leading up to the restaurant. Sadly, this lack of accessibility prevents the handicapped diner from gaining entry. But the climb will certainly perk the appetite of those able enough to make the ascent. We have been going there since about 1977!~
Focusing on the truly Chinese ethnic dishes versus the fried Polynesian style "pupu" finger foods that most Americans routinely order & expect will surely , in our opinion, delight the discriminating palate. I say this after eating in so-called Chinese restaurants from Maine to California and throughout Europe, just about every where BUT China! Bon apetit!I AGREE!
I completely agree with the rater about the stairs. It is certainly inconvenient, and tiring. And especially when many people are there, it takes about 5-10 minutes to get up those stairs.
YUCK YUCK!
I daresay that this restaurant's service s horrible! The stairs have caused many I know to cause pain and discomfort. Why isn't there an elevator? The flight of stairs is incovenient and is plain bad. Once you're tired, how can you eat? You could walk to your death by walking up the stairs to China Pearl!
