Locals agree -- with little dispute -- that the 9:30 Club is the king of DC music venues. The 9:30 Club is performance central, where more than 200,000 fans per year pay to stand and experience the best-known national and up-and-coming acts. Headliners are, in a word, spellbinding. Animated crowds, especially when the place is packed, give artists the drive and momentum to provide blistering sets. The drawback? Sometimes this means less than ideal views of the stage. Still, this cavernous club plays host to approximately 300 shows annually, and past performers have included R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins and local favorites, No Second Troy.

The venue's design is well thought out and focused on the audience: There are two box offices, and inside, four bars, a downstairs lounge, balcony tiers, a 90-ton ventilation system to circulate fresh air every nine minutes and ample bathroom facilities. Couple this with a stellar sound and video system, and you have a great place to take in a show. -- Elisabeth Frater

  • Love the place in general, but the bouncers...

I may have looked odd going there early and sitting upstairs by myself. I didn't think I deserved get stared downed by 2 bouncers on the main floor, who looked like they were recently released from the joint. Looking right at me, as though they were just itching to beat on someone. Very awkward and unsettling to say the least. After a couple of miller lights, I was good. Still have fun there, which is saying a lot for this town.

  • I hate everything about you, 930 Club.

It is a terrible neighborhood, so you don't want to drive or you risk getting your car stolen or getting ripped off by a parking attendant. On one occasion we parked in a lot, and the guy in the lot across the street said he was in charge of both lots, so we paid him, then when we came back to put something in the car, the REAL attendant for that lot made us pay him, too.

But you don't want to take the metro either! Because 99/100 times you'll miss the end of the show if you want to make the last metro out of that crudhole. But as I said, it's a sucky neighborhood, so you don't want to try to walk there from elsewhere either. It's a lose-lose situation.

Then there's the bouncers. A couple of people have mentioned that they are, well, jerks on power trips.

The venue itself, other things aside, is fair enough, I guess.

It's a shame this is pretty much THE club for live shows in DC. My advice is to go to Baltimore instead and enjoy Rams Head Live! which is a zillion times better. Better neighborhood, better staff, better atmosphere.

Skip this club unless there's no alternative.
