Smack in the middle of all South Street mayhem, the Theatre of Living Arts -- or, as it's generally known, the TLA -- has hosted a staggering number of national acts in its 800-seat space. Owned by Clear Channel, which bought former TLA owner Electric Factory Concerts in the late '90s, the TLA often manages to book acts that are too small for the slightly larger Electric Factory, but too big to play at small clubs. Out front, you'll often see the tour buses of acts ranging from local favorites the Roots to My Morning Jacket to Guided By Voices out front. If you're lucky you might even catch musicians dashing across the street to Lorenzo's for a little preshow pizza. Inside, the venue itself is nondescript, with a gently sloping floor and two over-21 areas -- one downstairs and one by the balcony (all TLA shows are for all ages). Acoustics are decent, and shows are often sold out, so stop by the box office or buy tickets from Ticketmaster in advance.

  • Best Venue in Philly

    Review rating : 5out of 5   nsdqlnmb - 03/10/2006

The TLA is one of the best venues in philly, it is standing room only, but so are the Electric Factory and the Troc. Since the TLA actually used to be a theather the floor is sloped downward so you have a great view from anywhere in the place. The venue is smaller than the Electric Factory which gives a more personal feeling with the bands playing. The sound system is great, and during the concerts i usually like to drift back toward the middle of the floor, seems to sound the best around there. They also have an upper and a lower bar. Great place to see a concert, don't miss out.

  • This Place is a Dump

This place is a dump especially since Clear Channel took over...it's standing only concerts...so even if you go to see a singer/songwriter who sings slower tunes, you're standing almost 2 hours! It's really shocking. Especially since most people who comprise the audience for such singer/songwriters have no idea they'll have to stand thru the entire performance until they arrive! And then there's no way to e-mail the TLA to give feedback...guess this is indicative of a venue run by a corporation that's trying to control the music industry as they own most of the radio stations in the country and are now trying to monopolize the concert venues too...If you can the performer anywhere else, do so!
