Billed as the longest continually running concert club in the U.S., the Newport has been a rite of passage for the youth of Columbus since it opened as a performance hall in 1970. Recent renovations have hardly detracted from its faded but roomy ambiance, which consists of ample balconies and 10,000 square feet on the first floor, including a space for dancing. Aside from new bathrooms and a wheelchair ramp, the interior remains dark and artfully shabby, all the better to enhance the intimacy of the 1700-seat venue. The Newport has hosted now-legendary stars like Kiss, Queen, U2, Talking Heads and the Police, and continues to draw everyone from O.A.R. to Busta Rhymes. Built in 1923 as an ornate movie palace, it has provided students a cultural awakening for decades, somehow surviving the onslaught of drug stores and fast food chains on High Street. Shows are general admission, so it's best to get there early -- although considering the layout and the relatively small size, there aren't too many bad views.

I saw Armor For Sleep, Underoath, and Taking Back Sunday on February 24, 2007, and it was absolutely amazing! It may be a bit small, but it makes it all that much better, and more intimate than any other venue I've been too. Also, you can bet you'll meet someone from any band you go and see. I did! I suggest the venue to anyone!

THIS IS BETTER SOURCE TO SEE GREAT BANDS BECAUSE ITS A SMALLER AND MORE INTIMATE VENUE. EVEN THOUGH ITS BASICALLY STANDING ROOM ONLY, AND LIMITED BAR SEATING, YOU CAN SEE FROM EVERY ANGLE, ESPECIALLY FROM THE THE BALCONY, SINCE IT WRAPS AROUND THE ENTIRE PLACE. THIS PLACE IS NOSTALGIA AT ITS BEST, HOWEVER THE RESTROOMS ARE IN NEED OF MAJOR RENOVATIONS!

Check this place out...great big name bands come through here. I think C-bus would agree they should book more local bands like Embassy.

Nothing bad about this place. You want to meet the band after the show? Great! Head on to the back alley. You want to chill and have a drink away from the pit? Great! Choose one of the bars either on the balcony or the main floor. There's no better place to crowd surf- the pit is HUGE. Best place in the world for mid sized acts.

I have been to some great venues but In OHIO I love to closeness of concerts at the Newport the most. When I go to a concert I do not want to use a pair of binoculars. I do not like to pay money to look at someones head. The newport is a great small venue where you can get to the front of the floor without getting likked or trampled. Not to mention the concerts this hall brings in> If it was not for the Newport we would all have to see concerts in places like Polaris or Shottensteins. Lets get to the point Community is what concerts at the newport are all about.
