Fifty years ago, this venerable Newport Beach restaurant was the hangout of stars like Humprey Bogart and Shirley Temple. These days, whatever it lacks in celebrity clientele, it makes up for in historic significance. Occupying the same location since 1922, it's Orange County's most venerable restaurant. The old-fashioned interior decor and tuxedo-clad servers recall yesteryear, while the vast menu has been compiled gradually over several generations. It offers literally hundreds of choices: steak prepared a half-dozen different ways, any veal dish you can imagine, and Continental classics like Lobster Thermidor and Beef Wellington. Steak Diane, swordfish steak and sauted jumbo prawns are among the numerous specialties of the house. When they're available Florida stone crabs are a must. Prices are medium-high, but reasonable considering the amount of food that you get. Many of the same items are available for approximately half the price at lunch. On Sunday and Monday, a special menu offers about 15 favorites such as grilled fish filet and Veal Parmigiana for under $20.

Arches is on 29th and Waterfront is WONDERFUL
I am in love with the food, the ambiance and most of all the Host...what a fabulous place for a long romantic lunch or dinner. The food is wonderful and the service impeccable. Pricey...No More...The Recession Proof Lunch is $ 8.95- $ 10.95 for Kobe Cheeseburgers, Pulled Pork, Salads and more and those old favorites remain on the menu as well! The Arches and the Arches waterfront are wonderful hidden treat...don't miss this opportunity to be here during the holidays...sneaker spot to eat and then go around to Spagetti Factory to watch the boat parade! Enjoy!

I was a patron of the Arches on PCH, from 1960 until the week they closed in 2007. I have not been to the 'new' Arches on 29th Street except to stop and look around before they opened. The last few times I was at the Arches on PCH I was disappointed. It used to be the best place to go in Newport (through the 60's, 70's & 80's) for good food, excellent service, pleasant decor and ambience. In the 90's it started to slide, not sure why, it just did. I wish the 29th Street Arches success. It is smaller and might bring back some of the ambience and intimacy.
Good food, very expensive!!
This will probably be one of the last reviews of The Arches since they will be going out of business (moving to a new location). Went there for my wife's bithday, the food was excellent, good service, decor was nice however dining room was a bit loud as there were some larger parties (6-8 people) in the room so there was no intimacy. I had the Filet Mignon ($50) and my wife had the lamb chops ($38) with a half bottle of pinot ($22) and a Shrimp cocktail for appitizer ($18) ....do you get the idea. These prices are among the most expensive I've ever seen..everything needs to be about $25 less then on the menu...Steak and Lobster, take a guess...($95) Outragous!!!! Now I'm not a penny pincher, I like a good meal like everyone else and I'm willing to pay for it, but not at these prices. Stick to the Sky Room, Orange Hill...etc.
Don't Go
Our experience at The Arches was extremely disappointing. It had a great reputation in the past but has fallin into the depths of misery.
As a former server, I thought the service was extremely poor. Dirty dishes were stacked on the back of booths and the waiters although dressed in tuxedos were average to below average hosts.
The $50 filet mignon was actually a sirloin and at best a good Denny's sirloin. The $40 fried shrimp were tough and the chicken was average.
For the prices they charge -- $20 - $125 a plate -- you would think this might be one the best meals you have ever had. I was wrong to think that.
I would have been more pleased to spend a quarter of the bill and have better food at Sizzler.
Don't go to The Arches in Newport Beach.
