The owners of Pho Tau Bay fled Vietnam in 1974, leaving behind a string of restaurants. Since relocating to New Orleans, the expatriates have opened two restaurants specializing in their homeland's cuisine. The Fat City location of Pho Tau Bay is one of more than two-dozen restaurants and bars crammed in a two-block square area. Next door to an amateur boxing club, this Vietnamese restaurant caters to just about everyone. Regularly packed for lunch and dinner, Pho Tau Bay takes its pho (a traditional beef and noodle soup) seriously. As a matter of fact, the menu lists more than 20 varieties of soup, along with spring rolls, Saigon tacos, fried rice and banh mi sandwiches. To drink, choose from a variety of beverages such as jasmine tea, coconut milk and homemade soy milk. The minimal decor includes light-green walls, fabric tablecloths and a small fish tank. -- Craig Guillot
