If there is one sandwich every New Orleanian agrees about it's Mother's Debris. Debris, for the uninitiated, is that flaky, juicy meat that falls off in small pieces as a large roast beef slow cooks. What some cooks might call expendable, Mother's has built into a decades-old institution. Those in the know order all the way with The Ferdi: debris on French bread combined with flavorful baked ham. And if you thought you knew all there is to know about local cuisine, you probably haven't had a bite of Mother's mac-and-cheese or mustard greens. Or if you thought all shrimp po-boys are created equally, you need just one bite of Mothers version to change your mind.
To get a sense of the history of the place, simply read the writin' on the wall. From letters of adoration sent by the grateful dining masses to 1960s newspaper stories touting Mother's masterful ''spaghetti pie,'' you can spend hours tracing Mother's story. Hey, if it's good enough for Lenny Kravitz, Francis Ford Coppola and Dustin Hoffman, don't you think you need to find out what all the fuss is about? This is a take-your-time experience -- so be prepared to wait in line (outside) at peak hours.-

Mothers
Falsegd is spot on. The Landry's (original owners) must be turning in their graves. This guy has taken probably one of the very best N.O. institutions and not only destroyed it but also ***** the unsuspecting tourist by charging outrageous prices for not even low quality N.O. food thus giving us a terrible name. Blue Runner canned products are much better than the quality of the food at Mothers these days and at a fraction of the cost. But what the heck, Jerry (new owner) couldn't care less and publically says so while chewing on that disgusting cigar and talking about those "stupid gulible tourists". You sure don't see any locals there anymore. I'm sure the Landry's ARE spinning in their graves knowing what this guy has done to their restaurant and what he is doing to the reputation of our city and how their children (heirs) sold out their good name and the restaurant they worked all their lives to maintain.

Tourist be warned "Tourist Trap"

I've lived in New Orleans for over 50 years and the old Mothers Res. use to be pretty good, but now it's just a "Tourist Trap." All of the food they serve there is mediocre and the service is terrible. You will wait in line for ever and be treated like you are trash ,when you finally get your order. Stay away from this place and go to some of the other Po Boy Res. that are listed on this site instead, any place is better then "MOTHERS"
The Best
When ever we stopped at the airport for fuel we would send a crew member to Mothers and get sandwiches to go. YUMMMMMM

don't bother, there are better

They are rude, the wait is long, they are overpriced and the food is not worth it. I actually know that they fired an employee that was too nice to the guest. They believe that people like the rude behavior and don't care if you don't.
Pefect for the Masochistic

I work literally around the corner and have been there a few times for breakfast and lunch. The food in general is mediocre but I do LOVE the Early Bird breakfast special. It's nothing fancy- just good grits, biscuit, eggs, and sausage. The SERVICE is CONSISTENTLY THE WORST I've ever experienced. The employees are rude and I thought that if I'd become a regular, they'd be nice but they apparently do not discriminate. I've experienced waiting at the counter to be acknowledged for minutes while the servers talked to each other. While waiting for my food I overheard the loud cashier saying that her boyfriend walked in on her cheating and then he punched her in the face. But the general ATTITUDE from everybody is just unbearable even when I'm starving. Basically, the feeling I get is that Mother's doesn't care about providing a friendly, inviting atmosphere to compensate for the overpriced mediocre food because they don't have to. They have become synonymous with good ole' New Orleans cuisine and they can get away with it. They're number 3 on this AOL list and have 2 stars!!! That says it all. . .Try other places near by like Commerce or Welty's.
Not to be missed
Mother's is a scene for enlightened tourists and locals alike. Great po' boys, though every local says he knows a better, cheaper place. Don't miss the black ham, the etouffe omelete and the bread pudding. It's the first place I go when I get off the plane.
fiasco
Do not go to this restaurant. The "shrimp creole" consisted of 3 shrimp and a load of poorly cooked rice. The sides were elementary school cafeteria caliber and severely overpriced. My sandwich was served in a pool of strange cooking juices. The working staff does nothing to accomodate entering customers, who are forced to "figure it out themselves" where to sit, and how to go about getting their meals. They also won't bother to compensate customers for the mistakes mentioned before. Mother's doesn't even deserve half a star and they probably paid their famous patrons to put in a good word.
