There's a reason why locals and tourists alike flock to the Maple Leaf Bar, and it isn't the overcrowded dance floor. While the heat from the throng of revelers can be stifling, the history, character and steady stream of musicians overcome it and triumph to make Maple Leaf the quintessential New Orleans club.

The patterned tin walls, wood accents and candlelit patio capture the 'jumpin joint' past or the club -- Originally a chess and music club --- while the two full bars and lively R&B, Cajun, Zydeco and Reggae music keep the crowd gyrating even at sweaty, close quarters. The masses typically overflow out onto the street where the party atmosphere continues until daybreak.

Tuesday nights are packed with The Rebirth Brass Band's regular set and Sunday afternoons continue the 20-year tradition of poetry readings. The variety of music, moderately priced drinks and diverse crowd ensures that everyone will find a reason to stop by Maple Leaf at least one night a week.

They always have a band that you can dance and move to. You can't help it. If you aren't dancing then you are the odd man out at this place. The best back porch in the world, small and cozy. Strong drinks at a fair price. I've been there twice this month. Saw Big Sam's Funky Nation. A great place if you want to get away from the french quarter scene. In one word: FUN.

I walked into the Maple Leaf to get a beer and left 12 years later. Oh the stories that I can tell, and those that I can not make this the best place to be.

I thought this was a really cool place for a tourist (which I was)... the band was great the night I was there and the building was full of history. Check it out!

The Maple Leaf on Oak Street is definitely the best bar in town. The entertainment is usually local musicians and bands. It is open until the wee hours and has a patio resplendent with trees and tropical plants. The bartenders are friendly and the prices are reasonable. The Sunday afternoon Poetry Readings are a delight.
