Perhaps only in New Orleans could a bar exist that's simultaneously romantic and decadent. Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, nestled in the less-touristy environs of lower Bourbon Street, is that bar. Whether or not you believe infamous pirate Jean Lafitte used this former blacksmith shop as a front for more nefarious enterprises, the location is still rich with history. For one thing, it's the oldest structure in the country (circa 1772) still doing service as a bar, and it helps keep that mystique alive with its conspicuous lack of electricity. Candles and a fireplace provide the only light. The bar also numbers playwright Tennessee Williams and more recently Lenny Kravitz among its more famous patrons. Besides these bullet-point features, Lafitte's boasts a friendly staff, a good mix of locals and tourists, and relentlessly casual atmosphere. Keep an eye out for piano standards on the weekends and potent Everclear-laced cherries every night.

I'm sorry, I have to step in.

All night long the manager was screaming at his staff.

Later tat night he beat up a teenager for drawing on the sidewalk with chalk.

He must be on drugs or something because he acts like a kid.

  • The best VooDoo's in town!!!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ja2001nj - 09/04/2006

I love this bar so much! You have to make it a to do when you hit the town. If you go when it is hot(weather) please try the VooDoo or mix or strawberry and grape, it is the best frozen drink that will knock you on your ass! The have the best bartender ask for INEZ she is great! Everyone else I met that worked there was great as well, but she was so much fun. The candles on the bar set the mood, and so does the fact it might be haunted.... Really fun bar away from the generic bars of Bourbon. I stayed for hours and went back every afternoon for my Voodoos. Can't wait to go again. Keep up the good work guys, it was fun. Jen from Jersey

  • Awesome Place

    Review rating : 5out of 5   brittney51982 - 02/01/2005

Lafitte's is the best place around.. Not only do the locals enjoy it but it is a famous spot for the celebrities to hang because of the lack of lighting.. Everyone is very friendly and the owners will make you feel like a true native... this is a definite spot to visit if you come to New Orleans... And especially don't miss the ancient statue that is built in the ground of Adam and eve.

  • Candles and yummy Voodoo

"I love this bar" the country song comes to mind every time I think about this place. From the moment I walked in the door it felt as though I was a "regular" the owners are native to the area and take great pride in their roll of continuing the business, their staff is a really friendly bunch that love to pass on the Jean Lafitte stories of his pirate/businessman history. It should be noted that this bar has been graced with the prestigious recognition of National Historical Marker making it all the more special. Bar hoppers mark this one on your list of "to do's" for sure because you haven't been to New Orleans until you've been here for a VooDoo.

the bartenders at lafitte's are all wonderful. CarrieAnne, Jason, Melissa, and Nicole all serve up some mean drinks. Ask any of the lower quarter locals.
