It's strange but true that a really good po-boy is hard to come by in the French Quarter. Many Quarterites will go ONLY to Johnny's Po-Boys, where the prices are relatively high but the product is at least reliable, if not great. The old-fashioned cafeteria setting is perfect for a casual bite between sights, though the dining room is a bit rough around the edges -- hardly a spot to settle in for a main-event meal. Amiably gruff counter service and a decidedly unhurried touch to the preparations complete the picture of an old-time southern lunch spot. The sandwiches can also be prepared to go, and the Woldenberg Park is just two blocks away, beckoning a riverside picnic. Shrimp, oyster, roast beef, sausage and all the other familiar favorites for French-bread fixing are on the board that serves as a menu. Red beans and rice, jambalaya and breakfast items are also available, but, like the name says, the focus here is definitely on the po-boys. -- Stella Hebert

New Orleans' Most Tastiest and Finest Po-Boys Are Here!

I've been eating at Johnny's my entire life and have eaten at all the other sandwich places in the city. JOHNNY'S has the BEST PO-BOYS anywhere in New Orleans, the surrounding parishes, the state of Louisiana or the world by far. And I've eaten myself around the world. The Chefs I know agree with me that Johnny's Po-Boys is New Orleans and has the Definitive Po-Boy. If you haven't had one, do it as soon as you can as you haven't lived until you do. If you tried one or thousands, go have another RIGHT NOW and savor every bite!
Add CommentNeighborhood shop is great
There are tons of good sandwiches and good food in N.O. and this is the local place to get a great sandwich. Its a working man's place, a neighborhood deli not looking to impress anyone with its looks, but the people are great and the food is delectable - dripping good, running down to your elbow good.
Newe Orleans and it 's food....MMMMMMMMM!
There is no food in New Orleans, that my taste buds don't hanker for.....all food in New Orleans is wonderful......No place like it!!!!!!
DottieDistills the feeling of NOLA and offers good eating.
I am a New Yorker who travels often to New Orleans which is my favoriote city in the United States. Like NOLA itsself, Johnny's will not be everyone's cup of tea and will not attract those who prefir the sterile atmosphere and in my opinion boring food of the big chains. But it is one of the better Po Boy shops in the French Quarter and for the non fancy atmosphere still manages to capture the feeling of the great city. I like the roast beef with debris - and now prefir it greatly to Mother's which has slipped. I fancy those who like Johnny's for lunch will enjoy the Gumbo shop which also puts out decent standard NO fare with a lot of atmosphere. Visitors owe it to themselves to sample the local fare and flavor outside the French Quarter - dare I even say Metarie?
