A leisurely evening at this rustic, rough-hewn cottage has fast become an Uptown dining tradition. From the hand-lettered sign outside the front door to the painted ceramic plates that line the walls, the restaurant glows with the burnish of the creative personal touch. That touch extends to the homey yet innovative cuisine that emerges from Dick Benz's kitchen. Arrive prepared for a bustling, cheery atmosphere and unfussy, delicious food; but arrive prepared to wait -- this is a take-no-reservations joint. Many believe that Dick's fried oysters, gumbo, crab cakes, tournedos and sweetbreads -- along with Jenny's homespun dining room -- are worth the extended time one can spend chatting 'round the patio out back until a table opens.
The 'no reservations' policy can result in some extended evenings, but aficionados don't seem to mind --especially when steak arrives with a 'side' of short ribs. The warm artichoke-crab dip is an excellent starter, the brisket (braised for five hours) a favorite entree and lemon crepes the perfect finish. There is also an extensive children's menu.
