The scoop: The hype can be a little strong on this late-night institution. For one thing, the Cafe Du Monde we know now only dates back about 70 years, which is not long at all by Quarter standards. However, for the combination of location, history, and the beignets, this is still the place to be. Having "CDM" coffee and beignets while sitting near the main artery of French Quarter foot traffic is an experience everyone should try at least once, preferably after a night of barhopping.

The scene: Situated at the near end of the historic French Market, and just outside Jackson Square, this cafe could not be nearer the heart of the historic New Orleans of legend. That does not mean, however, that you won't have to deal with mediocre service at times, or sticky chairs.

Insider tips: Beignets come in threes here; get a trio and wash them down with CDM's cafe au lait, a mixture of half coffee and half hot milk. The restaurant is always open, except on Christmas Day. -- Robert Fontenot

  • A MUST

You just can't go to N.O. without having cafe au lait and a plate full of powdery confections! Nothing beats biegnets or pralines (which are down the street a little) from N,O. There just isn't a better treat in this city. And by the way, the service is great, its just that busy at any given time.

i lovee eating cafe du monde for a breakfast treat.....but i wouldnt really consider it a place for dessert [unless you know all you want is a begit* and some coffee]. Cafe du monde is also to much of a tourist attraction, it's always crowded, and just because i hate the heat i dont like sitting oiut on that pattio unless it's very early in the morning or very late at night! hope this helps

Cafe Du Monde is one place in New Orleans that is a MUST to visit! It is positively amazing! The atmosphere is great with a nice open area and the ability to hear and see the great New Orleans life going on around you. The beignets are to die for! Yes, the might not be the healthiest thing in the world, but having a few is worth it. Even if you don't end up eating wonderful beignets, the atmosphere is amazing and something you would never want to miss out on!

I have been to New Orleans at least five times and only once visited the Cafe Du Monde and it was simply great. I will also take the time during my visit to New Orleans which will be in a couple of months, to visit Cafe Du Monde.
