The scoop: The hype can be a little strong on this late-night institution. For one thing, the Cafe Du Monde we know now only dates back about 70 years, which is not long at all by Quarter standards. However, for the combination of location, history, and the beignets, this is still the place to be. Having "CDM" coffee and beignets while sitting near the main artery of French Quarter foot traffic is an experience everyone should try at least once, preferably after a night of barhopping.
The scene: Situated at the near end of the historic French Market, and just outside Jackson Square, this cafe could not be nearer the heart of the historic New Orleans of legend. That does not mean, however, that you won't have to deal with mediocre service at times, or sticky chairs.
Insider tips: Beignets come in threes here; get a trio and wash them down with CDM's cafe au lait, a mixture of half coffee and half hot milk. The restaurant is always open, except on Christmas Day. -- Robert Fontenot

after a night on the town
There is nothing better than beignets and a cup of cafe au lait before driving home after a night in the French quarter. My first time was in 1956 and now at I have moved out of the city I never go into the city without stopping at Cafe Du Monde. I must admit that I miss the drive up service they had back in the 50's
Add CommentA bit messy BUT good!
You can tell the tourists in this place...powdered sugar ALL over themself and the floor! I guess you have to be a local to get it right. The tender fluffy fried doughnut holes are quite good. Its hard to stop eating them. The only down side is that they do not serve tea only coffee. What about us tea drinkers?
Best, best
Love Cafe Du Monde. Their Beignets are the best. We loved them so much, we came home from vacation and learned to make them ourselfves. We have had Beignets from other restaurants but they are a poor substitute to the Cafe Du Monde. Worth a trip to NO just for them!!
Just Great

This is the place that when you take a person, who is new to the delights of New Orleans, you watch their face. The smile that developes, with sugar all over their face. Delightful.
