Although it's relatively new by New Orleans standards (since 1946), Brennan's is nonetheless a culinary institution; it's best known for its ritzy, highly caloric breakfast events. The Creole/French restaurant, housed in a historic two-story, salmon-colored French Quarter building, has 12 dining rooms from which to choose, each with a unique theme and historic story attached; the Bacchus and Rex rooms, for example, are named after Mardi Gras parades. Most seats offer views of the beautiful tree-lined courtyard, another dining area from which to take in the restaurant's Old World elegance.

Famous for it's wine list, Brennan's menu suggests a pairing for each dish, including the exhaustive list of omelets. Eggs Benedict, oyster Benedict, and eggs Nouvelle Orleans, poached on a bed of lump crabmeat topped with a brandy cream sauce, are among the entree plates available on the $35 prix fixe breakfast. The dinner menu features local seafood favorites, including three variations of redfish and four shrimp entrees prepared with rich Creole sauces. The decadent Creole chocolate suicide cake and Creole white chocolate mousse pie are available all day, as well. Brennan's also makes a superb Brandy Milk Punch, a sweet concoction that tastes just as it sounds, making it a perennial favorite with sufficiently cultured locals. --Robert Fontenot, Jr.

  • breakfast at Brennan's disappointing

I rarely blog, but my Breakfast at Brennan's was terrible. I am a New Orleans resident and avoid tourist traps. But, my daughter, who had moved away after marrying, wanted a family gathering at Brennan's. On more than one plate were one poached and one HARD-Boiled (not poached) eggs. One order was swapped for a very different menu entree as all the entrees were being served. A drink order was wrong, and the ice cream sat a room temperature melted waiting for Bananna's Foster to be flamed. It rained and the ceiling gave way at a nearby table of guests. Take my word for it, this is a tourist trap, the food that was prepared was only average fare, the service was awful, and the price ridiculous: $600 for seven people. I will NEVER go to Brennan's again, and I hate to be critical of anything New Orleans.

Excellent presentation and wonderful flavor. Dessert is not my favorite - but could have licked the bowl of the banana's foster!

The server Carlos was by far the best server I have ever had. A must have server when dinning at this establishment.

Although the service may be somewhat pompous. The food is delicious. It is well worth the wait and the pretention. If you like turtle soup and bannanas foster, Brennan's brucnh is for you.
