Among the many pizzerias in town, the Tower stands as one of the grande dames. Sitting humbly in a Metairie strip mall, it verges on retro in terms of ambience and decor. A dozen tables, serviceable but not chic, accommodate the loyal families and neighbors who line up at the Tower when they crave bubbling hot, cheesy pizza. With dough being flipped in full view to the sounds of Sicilian and New Orleans crooners, the atmosphere is warm even when the air conditioning is cranked. The group-friendly menu includes an abundance of Italian comfort foods, but addictive thin-and-crunchy crust, homemade sauce, bountiful cheeses and Mediterranean meats make pizza the main event. Though vegetarian versions are available, boutique pizza this is not. Look for the old reliable toppings: pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, olives and the like.
