So how did a Kansas City barbecue place end up with a name like Oklahoma Joe's? Turns out that the owners started in the business by entering meat they'd prepared in their Oklahoma Joe's Smoker in local barbecue competitions. They were so successful in competition that the smoker company agreed to open a company restaurant with the team. Why the success? A trip to the KC restaurant answers that question: flavorful, well-smoked meat paired with a tangy, peppery sauce, great fries and thick, smoky baked beans. And since opening, the restaurant has built its own success, drawing in many barbecue lovers as regulars. First-timers should be ready for a little adventure. Joe's location is unique -- the restaurant is situated inside a gas station and adjacent to a company-owned liquor store. With food as good as Joe's, though, dinner itself is no risk at all. -- Anna Foote

Just the thought of OK Joe's Pulled Pork Carolina style with Onion Rings (I think the best in town) makes me salivate! The staff is friendly and work together like a well oiled machine. The total Oklahoma Joe's experience is well worth the long lines. Now I am craving it and gotta go!

  • Best BBQ by far

I have been to this establishment so many times, and it it by far the best BBQ in KC. The sauce is to die for, and everything is so delicious and finger-licking good. I stumbled across it years ago, and I always steer people towards there.

Won't find too many places better than OK Joe's on the KS side of the state line. Location is very close to Westport, Plaza, and KU med district.

Carolina style sandwich is tasty and tender...great sauce.

Depending on where I'm at in the city decides where I eat lunch. Ricky's, LC's,BB's, and K&M are probably my fave's. I thought I would like OK Joe's from what I know about there smokers(I own one) and the history I have learned about Slaughter House 5 from the competitions. I have only had Joe's bbq twice now but both times were pretty much disappointing. The 1st was brisket sandwich and fries to go. Very ordinary(try the killer at K&M), and soggy fries. The 2nd was a carryout slab from the new Olathe location. The slab was small and tender in only certain area's,and extremely salty. Would not pull from the bone, and the sauce on the side only added to the salty flavor. I Mesquite grilled some Angus burgers on the grill the other nite, no seasoning added, and used the OKJ sauce on the burgers and it was a nice balance. These guys are new to the restaurant business and will probably need a few years of good management and quality control to bring they're competition talents into this gendre. In the mean time I'll wait.
