The simple, uninspiring exterior and strip mall locale gives little indication of the quality Eastern European style cuisine served inside this popular north-side eatery. The inviting interior features lush velvet and Degas-inspired ballerina prints on the walls. The Russia House offers post-Cold War hospitality and surprising culinary treats.
The unique menu features a range of cultural classics from former Soviet countries like Georgia, Latvia, Ukraine and Moldova. If you are new to Russian dining, the wait staff will be more than happy to suggest an entree. Regulars suggest starting off with a filling order of satsivi, a chicken dish topped with thick, cilantro-walnut paste. If you would rather save room for the main course, go light with the vinaigrette salad or borsch. Dumplings, crepes and several chicken combinations will look familiar to locals. Group dining is made easy with the "tour". The five-course meal features dishes from the four feature countries that inspired the menu. The dessert selection is limited, with the sour cream cake taking top honors. -- Chris Saunders

I was born in NYC by a Russian father that cooked russian food for a living. since when is the potates bigger that the meat pieces?I spent $1399 for potates? Russian people are very friendly the russian house is not
Add CommentWhat a dissapointment!
My husband (who is Polish) and I have waited a long time to eat here. We were so very dissapointed! The place was FREEZING, and the personality of our server was cold as well. The food was bland, tough and greasy. My pork chop was poor, and even the famed sour cream cake was just "okay". The best part of the experience was the Russian beer. We will never go to the Russia House again, so we'll just have to dream of Slavic cooking the way Grandma Barkowski used to make....

(The russia house has the best food in town! You must try this place, very friendly and authentic.)Pretty good
I enjoyed the atmosphere and food of the Russia House very much. Nice decorations, beautiful dinnerware, and pretty Russian Opera in the backround added nicely to the authentic Russian dining experience. The food was well prepared, presented, and reasonably priced. Go there, try something new, and enjoy the finiest Russian restaurant in greater Indiana.
Authentic Eastern European Service

After sitting for over 10 minutes, the petite blonde owner finally Âgreeted my table by pouring a glass of water. There was no Âwelcome to Russia House, nor a friendly hello. Instead, the tiny woman simply poured a glass of water. Five minutes later, she said in a harsh feminine voice ÂVat ken I get you? Vould you like appetizer or vodka? It almost made me laugh since the vignette reminded me of when I was a recent college graduate backpacking through Europe and the former Soviet Union. Back then, however, I was younger and more tolerant of poor Eastern European service. Today, I prefer friendlier Western service. As far as food quality I give Russia house two thumbs down or better yet, one thumb down and one finger down my throat to facilitate regurgitation. My overcooked pork dish looked exactly like a Hungry Man dish, complete with reddish sauce, corn nibblets and canned green beans. The only good thing about Russia House are the $4 shots of ÂObsolute (yes, thatÂs what the menu says). Oh, my apologies to Hungry Man, since their pork portion is larger than 4 ounces and certainly cheaper that $13.50. Would I return to Russian House with love? Nyet!
(In all fairness I dined at Russian House before, and enjoyed the dumplings enough to return. Perhaps it was because I arrived 15 minutes before closing, so I was the only patron there. I am giving a 3 star rating since there is no half rating at Digital City. Otherwise, I would give it 2 1/2 stars.)Corrina6211976's Review

What a great value! A one of a kind. I find the service very refreshing. I certainly don't want an over the top, cheerleader style, American waiter in a Russian restaurant! Its authentic food presented in a beautiful little space, with good service.
