Voted "Best German Restaurant" five years in a row, the Rathskeller offers a nostalgic taste of Bavarian life and cuisine. Located in the historic, 19th-century downtown Athenaeum Building, the Rathskeller combines elements of a lively city beer hall with a charming, quaint hillside inn. Stocked with more than 12 imported draft beers and 40 imported bottled beers, the Rathskeller's "Kellerbar" is a great place to begin the evening.

But the hops are not the only attraction that keeps the Rathskellar hopping each night. Though there are nods to modern cuisine such as the chicken Diane, most regulars devour the traditional dishes like lentil stew and bratwurst in the authentic beer garden.

  • Love the place

I too served in the Army and I was also stationed in Germany. There is no other place in Indianapolis that is close to the Rathskeller with German food. I liked it so much that in a little over 29 hours I will be having my wedding reception in their Gran Kellersal Ballroom. It is a little pricey but in my honest opinion it's worth it for the quality off food and service you get. I like going to the Rathskeller for the 4th of July to see the fireworks and have a liter or two.

I try to hit up the Rathskellar at least a couple times a summer. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I love the atmosphere and I love when they open the biergarten. It is a SIGN that summer has started in Indy...when it's warm enough to wear a strappy tank top, drink big fatty 32 ounce beers outside and listen to live music, I know my life is getting better by the minute.

I discovered Rathskellar when I moved to Indy in 2002 and it is definitely in my Top 5 favorite places to go in the summer. I didn't have the opportunity to eat here until last year and since then, I've been in HEAVEN.

Authentic German food, beautiful waiters, the list goes on. This place does it right!! My girlfriend hosted her rehearsal dinner here in October and the ribs melted in my mouth (and I don't really EAT ribs). Oh, it was amazing. The food was plentiful, the bartenders know how to mix a mean drink and the beer options spectacular!

This place is a MUST do in the summer and great for groups, big dinners, special occasions and first dates. It will put you in a good mood...hit up the biergarten when Polka Boy or ZanaDoo is playing ...you will have a BLAST!!

Definitely something different when everything else in Indy has that monotone thing going on ...the blah blah blah...we did that last weekend feel. The Rathskellar always has a place in my date book.

  • At the end of the war?

Was stationed in Germany in the 70's U.S. Army.
Went back in the early 80's to Amsterdam a few times.

Yes, you can find this quality food over there. Would I eat there again? NO.
It wrecks my memories of the times when I lived there. I think the people that run this restraunt wanted to whip up anti- German hatred.

  • Authentic and Yummy

Love the food and the atmosphere! Not a cheap date, but worth the money for a special occasion.

Not very wheelchair accessible (you can't get into the bathroom but the dining area is accessible)

  • Will never forget.

So authentically German, you’ll think twice before stepping into their shower rooms. Their superior beers and masterful sausage plates, however, may give you poisonous gas.

  • This place is the PITS!!!!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   itsamesshere - 01/09/2007

I cannot believe that I wasted an evening of my life eating here!!! The food tastes like army rations, the beer is like overpriced B.O.
If you want to find something comparable, go to Arby's, and get a six-pack of P.B.R. Additionally, the staff are rude, and lacking in any social graces. I will never return to this barn of a restaurant, and would frankly rather eat roaches.

  • Worst German Cuisine ever

    Review rating : 1out of 5   aumclean - 05/22/2006

Sunday three weeks ago I went with friends to the Rathskeller. I am German and thought it would be a treat. But oh was that a mistake. The food was at least a day old. The salate had brown edges, the sliced tomato was slightly thriveled. The main meal was pre-prepared and warmed up in the microwave. I had ordered a Jagerschnitzel. The breaded meat ( which there shouldn't have been any breading, Jagerschnitzel is a natural) was soggy. The gravy tasted as if it came out of a can or jar. The spatzle (I can't believe they called those things spatzle) tasted like poorly done gnocchi. Whom are they trying to fool here. The only german thing about the meal was the name. I was embarrassed.
Everything stared to make a little more sense after a look into the kitchen: There were three mexicans in a cold kitchen, taking the food out of the refrigerator and heating it up. Voila, cheap food for not such a cheap price. We paid $60 for 4 people and there was no appetizer and no dessert involved. Never again

  • Very fun and unique to Indy

When you walk into the BierGarden you can't believe your still in INDY.

One of a kind place and everyone is welcome. Very fun

  • My favorite place!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   onehotitaliangal - 09/16/2004

The atmosphere in the Biergarten is amazing... Laid back atmosphere, all age crowd... Plus, the live music is always good, and the service is always great, too. I live and work in Kokomo, and I tell everyone that I know they should spend an evening there. They always tell me I should be working in advertising for them, hahaha! Anyhow, the atmosphere is for all ages, even my dad loves it and he's 67 y/o. If you get a chance to see the Woomblies --they are my fav! Try it once, you'll go back.

  • Love'n it!

This is my favorite bar in Indy! Great service and a great crowd! If you have never been before make sure you make it before it gets cold outside so you can enjoy the beer garden!
