Located in the historic Fountain Square Theatre Building, the Fountain Diner was first opened in 1959 by F.W. Woolworth & Co. The Woolworth store closed in the late 1960s, but as part of the restoration of the Fountain Square Theatre Building, the diner was reopened in 1994 and stocked with original equipment obtained from another Woolworth's. The Fountain is near enough to Eli Lilly & Co. to attract the pharmaceutical crowd and other business professionals with its diner service, nostalgic decor, and all-American menu, which offers burgers, jumbo tenderloins, fries and hand-dipped shakes. Pizza, soup and salad are also available, as is breakfast -- which consists of eggs, French toast, hot cakes and sausage. The Fountain Diner can be rented out for private parties or group functions as well. Also in the building are the original 1920s duckpin bowling alley, a 1950s duckpin bowling alley, and the upscale Mediterranean Shelbi Street Cafe. The theater showcases swing, rockabilly and other musical performers, and hosts many wedding receptions. -- Lori Lovely

The atmosphere is awesome! However, I've been there three times now and the service is probably the worst I've ever had. We will not be returning.

Edwards Drive In gets my vote, opened in 1957 and still going strong! Check out the place, corner of Sherman Dr. and Raymond St.

It is a fun place to visit, but the service and getting the food was so slow it made the experience less than it could have been.
