A place for anyone but fashionistas (unless, of course, they arrive still garbed in last night's attire), Walker Brothers is breakfast bliss. The Original Pancake House was founded in Portland, Oregon by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke. The Walker Brothers had several snack shops in the Evanston and Wilmette area and became one of the early franchises of The Original Pancake House. Each of the six local restaurants sports the Walker Brothers-style-stained glass, woodwork, lots of beaming brass and faux Tiffany lamp, but Lincolnshire is a bit more English Manor, while Lake Zurich leans toward a French Country decor.

You'll find a basic breakfast menu, scads of pancakes and Lincolnshire, Lake Zurich, Arlington Heights and Highland Park also serve sandwiches and salads. The franchise is famous for a buttery oven-baked apple pancake that's closer in size to an apple pie. It has Granny Smiths mixed right into the batter. The smaller Dutch Baby uses the same batter and there's a puffy German pancake served with lemon and powdered sugar or fresh strawberries and bananas, Belgian waffles, thick French toast and omelettes oozing substantial fillings. You'll find families lined up at all the eateries, so arrive early to be sure to get a seat.

  • expensive, but worth ever penny

I go there (either Highland Park or Lincolnshire) about once a month, it costs a little more than the average breakfast out, but worth it. I have a hard time choosing between the hub cap sized Apple Pancake or one of the wonderful, fluffy baked omelettes.

I have lived in Chicago for over 15 years and live in Evanston near the WB in Wilmette. After all of these years, I fail to understand the adoration attached to the Wilmette location. Is this restaurant really worth waiting in line for. I do not think so. Is the food consistent? Yes. Is it great? No. There are plenty of other options if you ask me.

  • Consistent Qualitiy for Generations

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Jessterlyn - 05/30/2008

Five? Because it's a great place to indulge any time of day or evening!
Both my husband and I grew up as Walker Bros "regulars." Over the years, the menu has expanded and the prices are up, but the food quality and service remain consistent and outstanding.

The wonderous selection of pancakes are as diverse as they are delicious. The eggs and omelets dishes are excellent (omelets are HUGE) - both come with a side of toast or pancakes.) They even have very good meat/poultry, seafood and veggie crepes - and mighty good hash browns and corned beef hash. The bacon, sausage and ham sides are all first rate. The Hawaiian Kona coffee and decaf are brewed perfectly and they come by with frequent refills. Fresh fruit juices, too!

It is almost always very busy - so be prepared to wait in line - especially at peak meal hours. I think aside from the delicious and generously portioned good - people also come to admire the beautiful stained glass, real and faux Tiffany lamps and gleaming woodwork and booths.

This restaurant is a classic and we have never been disappointed here. Come to think of it - maybe we'll go there for supper tonight...
