Don't expect this west suburban spot to update its decor anytime soon. After all, the kitschy atmosphere is the big draw. Hala Kahiki, an old-time favorite in River Grove, is best known for its extensive cocktail list and retro South Pacific setting. A thatched hut-lounge feel, bamboo fixtures, tiki figurines and an outdoor tropical seating area make guests feel as though they've been whisked to balmy spots like Fiji, Hawaii or Tahiti. Don't arrive on an empty stomach (there's no food on the menu) as the tempting cocktail menu features more than 90 drinks, as well as wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks. Order one of the classics such as the Hurricane, Mai Tai, Planter's punch or Zombie. Or opt for a Hala Kahiki original like the royal chocolate drinks (milkshakes made with rum, cocoa and whipped cream), Skip and Run Naked (rum and beer) or the Volcano drink for two. The gift shop offers a number of novelty items, including shot glasses, party items, jewelry and drink mixes.

Rude and Ignorant Employees

Their staff is very rude and ignorant. My husband wears a hat because he had cancer as a child in his skull. In his state issued drivers license's picture he has a hat on because of the scars. In other words it's a medical reason. Which is one of the areas that the federal and state discrimination laws throughly cover. The staff was very, very rude to him and wouldn't let him in, in fact ordered him to leave when all he said was 'really I have to leave? I have a medical reason for my hat'. His hat was a golfers hat by the way. He is also 38. I called and spoke to the manager Rory and told me Hala Kahiki don't follow no laws and they can refuse service to anyone they like, even medical freaks. Nice reaction when I was just looking for the manager to speak to the woman at the door about being considerate of those with medical conditions.
Also I used to go to the Hala Kahiki a lot with friends a few years back. Though we went there often they always were kinda rude and I have heard them say they don't care about lost business because they don't need it anyway to customers. I work in client services and I would like to work for an independently wealthy company like the Hala Kahiki that can afford to lose business over being discriminatory and rude. Must be nice to run a business and not worry about making a profit.Add Comment
