Anyone who drives down Clark Street early in the evening will witness throngs of eager concertgoers waiting for the doors of the Metro to open; this is the only place in Wrigleyville where people donning fishnet stockings and creatively placed body piercings outnumber those dressed in Cubs paraphernalia. A glance up at the black and white marquee reveals what has drawn such a motley crowd -- a stacked lineup of local, national or even international talent will play that evening.

Since 1982, this mostly all-ages venue -- some late night shows are 18 and older -- has showcased a variety of musical genres all the while gaining a reputation as being one of the best alternative rock clubs in the city. Rock greats Ministry and the Smashing Pumpkins both got their start here, and the list of prominent bands the Metro has hosted is long and intimidating, including Moby, The White Stripes, Liz Phair, The Violent Femmes, Interpol, Steven Malkmus, and Mos Def to name a few.

The bi-level space -- the top level has VIP seating and the general admission crowd fights their way closer to the stage at the lower level -- has seen its fair share of rowdy fans and late nights. But while some would call the Metro shabby and beer-soaked, others find it charming or, at the very least, deserving of respect for consistently being at the forefront of the Chicago music scene. And if none of the raucous alt-country outfits, infectious hip-hop MCs or blistering rock bands on stage command attention, then head downstairs to Smart Bar where some of the best deejays in the city spin dance music well into the morning hours.

the metro is a damn good place to see a show. i saw anti-flag there a couple months back, and it was the most amazing thing ive ever experienced. no matter where youre at youve got a great view, and standing in the back of the room might as well be next to the stage. great place

The best medium size venue in the city. Don't forget a good baseball experience and team are only two blocks and a short train ride away.

we went there to see rollins band 2 nights in a row. i found this place to be quite small. it was nice in a way cuz it was an intimate setting. found it odd that there were signs posted saying there was no moshing, crowd surfing or stage diving. yet everyone was. moshing was fine but when i got kicked in the face by some moron crowd surfer that secruity threw back (for the 5th time)instead of throwing out, i was a little peeved. thought the drink prices to be a bit steep. the ladies room was also a bit hard to find ( men on the ground floor on the way in, ladies way upstairs in a back dark corner behind the bar). people working the coat check were very nice and met a bunch of nice fans there though. might go back....

The first time I went to the Metro I saw the band WISH, who were unbelievable. The next week I got to see their buddies..LifeWithout. It was a Sunday night and the Chicago weather was at it's finest so it wasn't too crowded. We finished the evening next door at the bar, and I can't wait for the next best local bands which will be there. When's WISH going to headline?!
