There are reasons native Chicagoans and tourists alike consider Lou Mitchell's a must-visit -- from the donut holes while you wait to the double-yolk eggs that make every dish even more sinfully indulgent, Lou's knows how to do breakfast. Located in the South Loop, the restaurant has been a Chicago institution since 1923, and decades later, they're still dishing out thick French toast, enormous platters of pancakes, fresh-baked pastries, and of course, those famous skillets. The extras are just as delectable. Lou's boasts pure maple syrup, fresh-squeezed orange juice and slabs of toast served with every omelet. Be prepared to make some new friends -- chances are good you'll be seated next to strangers at one of the lengthy tables. Even if you don't bond with fellow diners, the employees' perpetually friendly smiles -- and free Milk Duds for the ladies -- guarantee that you'll want to return soon.

On her layover to Kalamazoo, my wife phoned me from Lou's to share her
excitment over your fabulous restaurant. An Amtrak conductor suggested
your restaurant for breakfast while she waited for her train to depart to Kalamazoo. we have decided to drive back to Chicago just as soon as we can
so we can enjoy your restaurant together. I can't wait ! Thanks again for making
my wife's brief Chicago vist so enjoyable. Regards, Ted Howell

No doubt it is an excellent restaurant and I enjoy going there. But, I usully end up with someones elbows sticking in my ribs. And that is no fun.

The quality is excelent so if you can stand sitting in someones' lap-----enjoy!

  • Excellent food and lots of fun

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Rejachi - 05/30/2008

We have been going to Lou's for 30 years and love it everytime we go. We have taken people from around the world their when they have visited us. We have never had one complaint about the food or service. In fact when they have returned they ask to go back to Lou's. One of my Australian friends said they have the best coffee he has tasted anywhere in the world.

  • It's XLNT

    Review rating : 5out of 5   WOGill - 05/30/2008

My wife and I have enjoyed breakfast or brunch just about every time we travel to or through Chicago by Amtrak. We introduced Lew's to some of our Chicago friends. All who have tried it have found it worth while. Large and tasty/tasteful portions, served expeditiously and with good humor. The atmosphere is filled with obviously cheerful and satisfied customers. We've never missed being offered the milk duds, donut holes and complementary sherbet or ice cream. It's XLNT!

Lou Mitchell's has charm, history and great food. A dining experience that I have enjoyed for the past 30 years.

  • No Donut Holes

    Review rating : 2out of 5   chasiubow1 - 09/04/2007

My girlfriend and I were visiting from out of town when we decided to pay a visit to Lou Mitchell's after reading other reviewer's comments. Although she did receive the complimentary Milk Duds, we received no donut holes while we were waiting and received no explanation about the lack of donut holes. We were seated outdoors where we waited for about 20 minutes before the waitress came by to take our order.

I ordered the Belgian Malted Waffles, an order of sausage and the Lou Mitchell's signature fries. My girlfriend ordered the Meltaway Rolled Packages and order of hash browns. The Belgian Waffels were perfectly cooked, the sausage was excellent as I do not enjoy overly salty sausage that attempts to drown out the flavor of the seasonings with salt and the signature fries were superb. Those who do not like chesse should skip the signature fries as they contain both Feta and cheddar cheese. My girlfriends rolled packages were quite good, but there was a little too much strawberry syrup, making the dish overly sweet. Our hash browns never came.

I must admit that the food that we did receive was quite good, but I am unable to give my experience 5 stars and my order was not complete and the primary draw of free donut holes was not delivered upon.

  • Better off at an IHOP

    Review rating : 2out of 5   buckstpshere12 - 06/08/2007

This place was not a comfortable environment and the food was only average. You'd do just as well at any IHOP.

  • A great place, but...

    Review rating : 5out of 5   dmostyn - 02/20/2007

Although Lou's is the greatest, they no longer serve real Mapel Syrup. There are other places they skinp as well. Like a lot of places, the ultra high quality has declined to simply high quality with the passing of the original owner...
