As the owners tout, this is ''where the city that works eats.'' And, people certainly have good reason to eat here: This is one of the best steak houses in the country. In fact, some diners work up quite an appetite before hand -- one big enough to devour the 64-ounce porterhouse. Don't despair if your work ethic doesn't necessitate eating 64 ounces of anything, though. You'll find a more reasonable 16-ounce New York strip or prime rib, a 10-ounce filet (all USDA Prime, hand-cut on the premise and aged a minimum of three weeks), or, if you're feeling really lazy, items like broiled swordfish with sherry butter or a big bowl of Caesar salad.
The name and reputation bring lots of tourists, but Chicagoans flock here as well, as evidenced by the photograph-covered walls -- a veritable who's who of the city's political, social and business communities, gangsters and all. Founder Henry Norton opened the Chicago Chop House in 1986 after nearly 30 years of bar-owning experience. His legacy lives on in the capable hands of three partners: VP of Operations Susan Gayford, General Manager John Pontarelli and Executive Chef William Farrahi. Regardless of the hours you've put in this week, you deserve a visit.

Superb!
It was my first trip to Chicago and I wanted to try a local steakhouse. Everything I had was absolutely magnificent. We started with the crabcakes which had great texture and a great sauce. I had a 20 oz NY Strip and it was cooked perfectly and tasted great. My friend tried the prime rib and lobster. That was the best prime rib I had ever had. For dessert tiramisu which was also perfect. The service was also great.... our server, Blanche, didn't miss a beat. Very well informed and had great suggestions. I suggest it to anyone visiting Chicago.
Add CommentBeyond excellent.
The food is only exceeded by the fun at the piano bar.
My old friend Hots Michaels held forth at the piano for many tears. A pity that he has passed on but the tradition continues.Excellent every time
I have eaten here many times over the past several years and the food service etc. are always outstanding. Whenever we have guests from out of town or want to treat somone to a real Chicago dinner, this is where we go. The food is outstanding. Don't miss the perch appet. it is the best I have ever had.
Chicago Chop House

We ate dinner there a couple of years ago and while my husband enjoyed his steak, I had the salmon and suffered the most excruciating case of food poisoning --vomiting and diarrhea. They had no web site so I wrote to them when we returned to our home the next day on the west coast to inform them of my experience. They claimed that since we had not been on their reservation list, that we had no valid complaint. I wrote back that we had just walked in off the street. I enclosed a copy of our receipt. I thought they might have the decency to offer a refund for at least my dinner, but Nnooo!. I never heard from them again. The next time my husband and I travel to Chicago, it will be a cold day in hell before we return to the Chicago Chop House.
top drawer
been to over 100 steak houses across the country. from the arroyo chop house in pasadena, ca to the top spots in fort worth and everywhere inbetween. the cuts are what makes a steak and the chicago chop house is simply better than the rest. service and aura are great but without flavor it would be meaningless. the aged porterhouse is like your first beer. you keep chasing the moment. put a visit on your bucket list.
