The history behind the name of this Quarter staple is attributed to its owner. Tom Caplinger left Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop behind in the '50s to open this most popular of New Orleans gay bars. Whether or not you buy into its claim of being the oldest gay bar in the country, it certainly has a rich and storied history; Tennessee Williams was among its original clientele, and the infamous balcony creates new and intriguing stories constantly, especially during big events like Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence. Two floors of dancing and videos and an extremely friendly staff keep Lafitte's crowded with people of all sexual proclivities, but it's definitely geared toward over-30 cocktail cruisers. The drink specials and events are without peer: insanely long daily happy hours, ''Trash Disco'' night, Karaoke, body painting, and a monthly ''Strip Pool'' tournament. An essential stop for anyone interested in New Orleans' gay club scene.
