Even if you miss the tiny stage set up in one corner of this shoe-box shaped barbecue shack, the framed bluesmen on the wall give it away. At Fat Matt's Rib Shack, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Rogers look down at the long tables in this small venue as if they'd love to join you at the table.

Fat Matt's has got the basics down here: chopped pork, ribs or birds, slab, half-slab or sandwich, and quarter-slab/quarter-bird combos, with sides of rum baked beans, Brunswick stew, roasted peanuts and slaw. That's it, and that's all you'll need. With pitchers or glasses of beer, of course.

But it's the live blues that elevate this nondescript slab of brick on Piedmont Road to a true must-hear eatery. Things get started every night around 8PM, with musicians gathered under the black-and-blue mural at one end of the building. Get there early, or you may have to listen from your seat on one of the wooden booths outside. And be warned that parking is limited. -- Edna McCown

I'm originally from Chicago and I believe Ribs shouldn't need any sauce to define their flavor. But I've also lived in Atlanta the past 14 years and have lost all idea of what REALLY GOOD food tastes like.
With that being said, Fat Matts is the best Rib joint I have found in my pursuit of good BBQ in the Metro ATL area. I still have a few places to visit, but between them and JR's in Norcross, I don't have any real complaints. I can't get Chicago Ribs here, so I go for the best I can find.
By the way, any REAL BBQ lover wouldn't mind the look of Fat Matt's, which I think is kinda like stepping back into time when people met at local taverns regularly. I just wish it was a bit more seating.

First of all, on the outside this place is a filthy dump. Mr. Fat needs to spend some money on capital improvements.

Going in the place is noisy and well, worn and filthy. I'm thinking, maybe they spend their profits on keeping their food quality up and their reputation as a great barbecue joint. Well, IF they are they dropped the ball with me.

Anorexic ribs and tough dry chicken. How "fat" got fat eating this garbage is beyond me. He must be going elsewhere to eat. I know I will be!

Last time I ate at Fat Mack's the ribs were cold and tough. Be BBQ in Metro Atlanta is at Speedy Pig in Fayetteville. Ribs fall off the bone they're so tender. Brunswick stew is excellent, too.
