Founded by Roy Yamaguchi in East Honolulu, this chain was a welcome addition to Tampa's cuisine scene. It's located across the street from the city's luxury shopping complex, International Plaza, and the restaurant brings a Hawaiian theme and promotes an 'aloha' style of service. Chef-partner Rand Packer, formerly of Roy's Maui venue, is in charge of the Tampa kitchen. The restaurant features open dining areas, an expansive lounge with a community table, a covered outdoor patio and an exhibition kitchen. Design details include concrete tile floors, exposed wood and wooden sea grass ceiling and handcrafted wrought iron and blown glass fixtures.

Theme items on the menu come from the Pacific Rim-Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Thai sauces complement the dishes. Popular items are found on the left side of the menu while the right side offers 15 to 20 chef's creations for the day. The Roy's series of restaurants are particularly focused on a series of Hawaiian and Asian creations: Hauula tomato, Maui onion and spinach salad; crispy Thai stuffed chicken with fruit chutney and macadamia-curry sauce; and miso-seared butterfish with Chinese five spice-butter sauce. Desserts include a sculptured chocolate, macadamia nut and praline mousse tower. And let's not forget the libations. The wine list is extensive, as you'd expect from any fine restaurant, but what Roy's does really great are tropical concoctions - pina coladas, mai tais, daiquiris, and Slingapore Slings, to name but a few.

  • Dining, as good as it gets.

    Review rating : 5out of 5   gdm320 - 06/05/2007

My two experiences at Roys were fantastic - anything from their wood grill is amazing, one of my trips had me eating a bacon wrapped filet which was amazing, although I think it was a special and not a regular menu item. The fish is great, the Dolphin is the best I've found outside of Marathon and Islamorada in the Keys. Pricey, but thats to be expected for the quality of food you find. I agree that it is a place to DINE, don't go there just to eat. The deserts are outrageous, especially the exploding chocolate fudge brownie... once you see a waiter walk by with it you'll HAVE to try it. Fine dining, the people were nice and pleasant. Try this!

  • fast food! rush service.

    Review rating : 1out of 5   jamesarushmd - 12/31/2006

service was rushed. multiple servers converged on the diners.
undercooked fish entrees for both of us. Salt smothered and killed the scallop&fish plate. we were made to feel unwelcome
when we returned one dinner for complete cooking, and we received a barely-concealed sneer when we declined to increase our culinary dismay and refused desert.

You'd never think of Roy's as a chain restaurant if you didn't know beforehand. Roy's has one of the most unique menus in Tampa. You'll find seafood entrees here that you won't see in any other restaurant in the bay area. As many times as I've been to Roy's, I've never been disappointed. Although it's not quite as good as the Roy's located on Maui, this is by far the best Pacific Rim/Hawaiian restaurant in the area.

Fabulous--A place to dine, not eat. The Lemon Drop Martini's are to die for. The staff are properly trained. Customer service and satisfaction show as the top priority. However, would like the Martini secrets.........

I went here for Valentine's weekend. They use very unique variations of familiar entrees. The pot roast was very tender; the macademia nut crusted mahi was crisp yet tender. There is such a variety to chose from. Valet is complimentary and prompt. It can be a bit noisey inside. We had the prix fixe menu: appetizer sampler, entree, and dessert for $30. Drinks are all $9 ea.

  • Wonderful Roy's

    Review rating : 5out of 5   doch609 - 01/26/2005

Have been there twice-once at the kitchen bar, once in front dining room. Both experiences were great. Do not forget the sushi/sashimi-the large rolls are great for four. Appetizers are unique, entrees delicious-desserts fantastic. Service is fun and good.

  • Diverse, Unique, and Wonderful!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   megmeg719 - 01/11/2005

One of my favorite restaurants, ever (even outside of the Tampa area)! I have dined at Roys numerous times and am always beyond impressed with my meal. Their menu is so unique and diverse, a true fusion menu. The amount of fish they have is extraordinary, and I love that a portion of their menu changes every day so there is always something new and different to try. The types of fish they have, and the fact that they know how to prepare it, is what makes Roy's such a gem. No where else in the Bay area are you going to find the Pacific and Hawaiian fish that Roy's brings in. Additionally, the decor and ambiance are very warm an inviting. The tables are spread far enough apart that you have some privacy and intimacy. A real treat! Definitely go if you have not yet been.
