Do you think a restaurant named for a hulking football player from Oklahoma (and the first Tampa Bay Buccaneer to be enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame) serves: A) Small portions of vegetarian cuisine; B) Nouveau California fusion food; or C) Giant portions of Southern soul food?
If you guessed C, you're right. Lee Roy Selmon's (backed by the popular Outback chain of restaurants) offers a menu of down-home favorites, some based upon the recipes of Mama Selmon herself (who raised two other football players: Lucious Jr. and Dewey). Appetizers include smokin' quesadillas (with pork or chicken) and fried oysters Lee Roy. Entrees include country-fried steak, fried chicken, crawfish-stuffed fried catfish, burgers, steaks and Mama's meatloaf. But the big draw card here is the barbecue, and just driving past this place gives you a scent of what it's all about.. Two smokers churn out everything from St. Louis style pork ribs that are slow smoked for eight hours to Southern-style barbecued chicken and beef brisket that's seasoned and smoked for half a day.
Sides include corn bread pudding and grits with bacon and cheese. Lest you think only those of big appetite are welcome, it should be pointed out that there is a "lighter side" section of the menu, featuring dishes like Georgia peach salad and Selmon chopped salad. The decor is what you'd expect: lots of football memorabilia and Southern knickknacks. Entrees range from $10 to $20.

Trust The Positive Reviews
Appetizer - fried green tomatoes. The tomato slices were lightly battered and despite being fried there was hardly a trace of oil on the food or the plate. The garlic horseradish dipping sauce was mild and tasty.
Entree - fried chicken. Two whole breasts - very tender, very moist; nothing chewy or dried out. The coating was light and crunchy but not so crunchy that it was hard on the teeth. I didn't realize until I cut into the first piece of chicken that they were boneless. This was a very pleasant surprise. The chicken came with a sweet dipping sauce that had just a hint of heat. A very nice complement to the chicken. There was hardly a trace of oil on my fingers or on the plate. The fried chicken came with smashed potatoes and mushroom herb gravy. Both were delicious.
The cornbread pudding was akin to a cornbread stuffing. Very moist and with a pleasant hint of sweetness. The apple-jack coleslaw was fresh-tasting and had shredded red apple in it. Very tasty, although I preferred the cornbread pudding.
Dessert  cinnamon-raisin bread pudding topped with sweet praline sauce and vanilla ice cream. Served warm. It was decadent and probably the best bread pudding I've ever had.
I was impressed by the fact that the fried foods had hardly any greasiness to them. I was also impressed by the fact that none of the food was overly seasoned or too salty, not even the fried chicken or the gravy.
The service was attentive despite the fact that the restaurant was busy. After the meal, the server brings a hot towel so you can clean your hands.
The prices are competitive with other restaurants of that caliber, although the fried chicken is definitely overpriced at $12.29. However, it was delicious and perfectly prepared so I won't complain. Quality costs.
The only complaint I have is that the slaw should have been served much cooler, not only for taste purposes but also for food safety purposes. Other than that, everything was great!Add CommentPoor attempt at southern food
The food is not good at all if you have ever had real southern food you will gag at your first taste. On top of that the service is terrible. Most overrated restruant in Tampa Bay hands down!
Dining out with Cesar

It's hard to believe how many people rated this restaurant 5 stars. I have to say this was the worst restaurant I've been to in Tampa. Food is awful.
super dining
the only thing wrong I couldn't eat all my food! Next trip down I am eating there again!
Favorite lunch joint
I'd call it upscale Barbeque. Everything I've had there is awesome. Go for lunch and get a Mahi Mahi Sandwich like you've never had one before. Homemade lemonade and sweet iced tea are personal favorites.

the bacon cheese grits were the best i've ever had! everything was so authentically homemade. i will go back in the future.
Great food , great service
I had the privilege of dining at Selmon's Friday evening and was totally impressed!! Everything was perfect from the cleanliness of the restrooms, to the prompt and attentive servers, and I haven't even begun to talk about the healthy portions or down home taste. The ribs were pull of the bone tender, the steaks grilled to perfection, and the cobbler was a piece of heaven . You must try this place !!!
