Billing itself as Tampa's 'First Upscale, All-You-Can-Eat Japanese Buffet,' Crazy Buffet offers a pleasant departure from the Asian smorgasbords that dot strip malls throughout the city. You may pay a little more, but in return, you'll enjoy a more upscale ambience, exponentially better quality and (surprise!) as much Chinese food as Japanese.

First-timers get the tour, with friendly hostesses pointing the way to the salad bar, the potsticker station, the de rigueur crab legs, sushi bar and desserts. The star of the show is the stir-fry and hibachi bar. You'll only get one pass for stir-fry, but you can stuff yourself on hibachi items to your heart's content. Ask the staff what they enjoy here; they'll often direct you to esoteric dishes that you may have overlooked. -- Lisa Galloway

  • Three strikes and they're out!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   robertskane - 04/30/2006

I have tried this restaurant several times (for lunch, can’t afford dinner!), in hopes that there would be some improvement. Alas, that has not been the case. I have found the food on whole, to be tasteless and bland. While there is a fair selection of sushi, it also lacks flavor and taste. On most of my visits, the majority of the items were either depleted or near depletion, and were slowly refilled or not at all. While this place is billed as a “moderate” priced fare, I don’t call $17.95 for lunch “moderate”. I can’t fault the “service”, at least what there was of it, other than what was spoken to me was mostly “mumbled” and incomprehensible. I could not understand the hostess, nor the waitress, so I suppose dinning there could be called an “immersive Japanese / Asian” experience. However the staff seemed to be pleasant and friendly, at least as they smiled and nodded as they skewered my wallet with their katana.
The only way I can relate the “Crazy” part of the name to the restaurant is that it refers to the condition of the patron who keeps returning to dine there. While the “atmosphere” is pleasant enough, I found the tables and booths to be on the small and “cramped” side. I have not dined at many other restaurants where the table in the booth literally rests against my chest while sitting to eat (at least I didn’t have a problem with “spills or drips”). However, having to stand to take a deep breath is bothersome. Maybe they forgot that they weren’t building in Asia and we Yankees are a bit larger of stature (yet smaller than Sumo sized). Reminded me of the “down-sized” parking spaces designed for “compact” cars while everyone is driving SUVs.
Overall this is the place to go if you are looking for a dinning adventure on the Ginza strip but without the 16 hour plane ride, and flavorful offerings, at a fraction of the price, and your wallet is as big as your appetite. Where taste isn’t a matter of taste at all!

  • Don't Eat and still Pay Full $

    Review rating : 1out of 5   bella1154 - 08/15/2005

We went with a group. A few of us only ordered drinks, I may have had one bite off of someone elses plate, literally one bite!!!
The manager made us all who DID NOT eat pay full price for the buffet and was EXTREMELY ROOD and DISTASTEFUL.
One bite cost me $20.00 plus my drink.
WILL NEVER EAT THE CRAZY BUFFET AGAIN.

  • No more free Birthday Dinner?

    Review rating : 2out of 5   tapdom - 02/04/2005

We have visited the restaurant on special occasions, especially with guests that enjoy large quantities of Sushi. During a recent visit for a Birthday celebration, we were informed of their new policy regarding no free Birthday dinners. It was a nice gesture while it lasted, we now celebrate Birthdays at Todai.

  • It Was Crazy All Right!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   rnksunglass - 12/31/2004

I was very excited to hear about this restaurant and really really looking forward to going there. It had been hyped on the radio for some time and touted as incredible. I don't know how long the restaurant had been open, but usually things are impressive in the beginning stages of a restaurant. Far from the truth! The food was only mediocre and many of the dishes on the buffet were either luke warm or too cold. I pointed this out to an attendant there so they could handle this dangerous situation. You can't have food that is not warm on a buffet of this size. I would never eat there again unless they changed ownership or quality of food. I don't eat sushi so I can't say anything about that, but the Chinese food was not worth going back for and certainly NOT worth the expensive ticket.

  • WOW

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ticta54455 - 12/09/2004

I loved this place. All you can eat sushi is woth the money (especially because you know it's fresh). The fresh crab legs were the best! I couldn't get that amount of quality food anywhere without paying twice the price. Plus, the atmosphere is amazing with the piano player and chocolate fondue fountain.

  • Not Happy

    Review rating : 1out of 5   jbelecaro - 09/13/2004

Super expensive for a surprising small menu, the buffet is crazy yeah because there is almost nothing to eat but sushi so they should specify that this is only for sushy lovers if not you'll go home hungry and very unhappy, service is rude, nobody there goes the extra mile to make a customer happy, I'll never go back to this place, the star I gave is just to be fair because of the sushi.
