It's getting tough to find a real burger -- the kind that's not shaped in some faraway processing plant and then slapped frozen into a high tech grilling contraption. We're talking juicy, drippy, char-grilled burgers made from beef ground fresh daily -- burgers that nestle themselves into their fluffy buns. These burgers come with baggage -- pickles, lettuce and tomatoes -- but also bring friends, those golden crispy fries.
Humbly appointed but scrupulously clean, El Cap (family established in 1963 and now run by the second generation) focuses on the glory of burgers but also offers other hearty grub -- the chili is a favorite of regulars. Eat on the patio if the weather is nice, park it at the bar if there's a game on and ask for extra napkins with your order. You'll need them. -- Lisa Galloway

Cheeseburger in Paradise
I can see that the Tampa Bay area is full of people who consider the Big Mac a hamburger. If you don't like the burgers at El Cap, you should be eating Oatmeal.

bad bad bad
I was so disappointed! I had always heard the burgers at El Caps were the best. They were small and shriveled, much like the burgers in a school cafeteria.

So-so
After reading all the great reviews, I tried a burger at El Cap. Nice little down-home atmosphere, but the food was very unremarkable. I don't get what the fuss is about. The fries were nasty and the burger was ok, but kind of greasy. If you want a good burger, go to Casual Clam on 9th Street.
