To say Coney Island is a step back in time doesn't do justice to the eerie nostalgia it invokes. Even if you didn't live it, you can imagine the joint in its 1940s heyday as you read the yellowed menu board. It opened in 1926, run by the same family, with trappings that must not have changed much either -- old vinyl booths and a long chrome lunch counter dominate. As for the menu, there are hot dogs, chili dogs and grilled sandwiches among the main courses. And if you're after something more, order the BLT or grilled cheese with tomato. Burgers -- thin like a fast-food joint's, but home style -- are also available, and you can wash them down with coffee, soda, milkshakes or buttermilk (!) if you choose.
In addition to the Americana ambiance, the price factor's also a bonus -- if you stick with a hot dog and a soda each you can get out of here for less than ten bucks on date (not that it's necessarily going to impress your girl, mind you). The vintage Coca-Cola signs are almost superfluous in view of the old guys in paper hats patiently attending the grill. Coney Island is old school, so be advised to show respect and don't order stuff that's not on the menu. Rumor has it a new St. Pete resident once ordered his dog with sauerkraut, and the cook stomped the counter and angrily cursed him for being another 'Northerner!'

WOW ...What a Great Dog House
I love this place. Not only do they have the best chili-dogs in Florida....but they have they're even better than Pennsylvania's legendary Yocco's (Allentown, PA) and Jimmy's (Easton, PA). I'm so glad a friend told me about this place. You can't eat just one chili-dog...I usually order 2....but always order 2 more....and then order 2 more to take home (but usually eat them while I'm driving or stopped at a red light). The milk shakes are thick and delicious....just like the waitresses...who all have a magnetic & feisty personality. My favorite is Tracey, who works on the weekends. She always makes me laugh and provides attentive service with a smile, a joke...and a great attitude. Food, staff and atmosphere is fantastic. Sometimes I even see former Yankees and current Ray's coach Don Zimmer snarfing down some dogs when I'm there. 2-Thumbs WAY up !

I've been eating at the old Coney since 1942 when I was stationed in St, Pete for a short time. I came back in 1946 when the war was over and joined the police department. My first beat was 9th St. N where the Coney is located. Havent quit eating those Coneys yet and they haven't changed a lot. Not on my diet, but at my age.........what the hell!
SIMPLER TIMES...sigh...
after reading about this place , I stopped by....
albeit this is just a 'joint'...that serves mostly
just hot dogs and hamburgers...surprisingly
they served good food.. HINT.....order some
of their cole slaw..put it on your hot dog..mmmmmm !
PAUL AND SHERRY IN TAMPA
PS/ revisit the GOOD OLE' DAYS....Brings back memories
I've been eating at Coney Island for 40 years and LOVE their chili dogs and chili burgers. Just don't ask the cook for a rare burger.....you'll be told that he'll cook it the way he wants it.....lol. That's because they say rare beef can grow things and they aren't supposed to cook rare burgers. Coney Island brings back memories and I wish I could figure out the recipie for the hot dog chili!
