There might have been other restaurants in San Diego serving fish tacos before the first Rubio's -- the tiny shack-like one in Mission Bay -- opened in 1983, but no one has popularized the Baja delicacy like owner Ralph Rubio. The recipe was inspired by a San Felipe taco shop that sold fish fresh from the sea, beer-battered and wrapped in a tortilla. San Diego, already a taco-loving town, jumped at the new treat topped with shredded cabbage, lime and tangy white sauce. Rubio's has now spread across the western states, and the fish taco has become an integral part of West Coast Mexican menus. Though it's an order-from-the-counter experience, Rubio's does its best to put guests in a relaxed, beach state of mind, selling Mexican beer and shading patios with palm branch awnings. Tropical fish tanks hold kids' interest while waiting for big nacho plates or carnitas tacos and let you know that no matter how far east the restaurant spreads, it will always be rooted in the Pacific shoreline.

YUMMY!
The first time I heard about Fish Tacos I thought...Yuck, boy was I wrong!
I haven't found another fish taco that compares consistantly as good as Rubios...They're Great! I have mine made on whole wheat or flour because I don't care for the taste of corn. The other food on the menu is also very good...Yummy!Comments(0)|Add Commentwithdrawels
Rubios is the first and hopefully they will expand.
sitting in Atlanta, Ga and having withdrawels.
the locals here don't have a clue about fish tacos!!!..
please open east of the Mississippi!...............U lost me!!!!
U had me going on "The Best" list up until the review of Rubio's being the best fish tacos in SD. I live in SD and it is a chain that is just ok. Whomever wrote this review didn't seem to look very far! Too bad, I was going to order the crab cakes (from Maryland) by mail per your raving review about it but not now!!!
Good but not the best.
I enjoy Rubios but my all time favorite is the Tijuana Oyster Bar. They have restraunts in San Ysidro, Bonita and pacific beach. They offer a wide variety of mexican seafood and they make it better than anywhere else in San Diego. Their tacos and cocktails are my favorite and the prices there are far more economical compared to Rubios.
Can't compare to the Baja
Well, the salsa was good and the beans were tasty but I have to agree with mom and pops in that they load up the tacos with cabbage and your plate with chips. They are really stingy...basically 'where's the fish?'' in the fish taco? It's a trendy chain. Go over the border and get some real food. Tijuana or Rosarito have great places with soft, fresh made to order tortillas, loaded and I mean loaded tacos, slow simmered refried beans, and killer margaritas.
