Carlsbad, CA 92008
The original Las Olas in Cardiff was one of the first places to bring the fish taco phenomenon north of the border and found it as a San Diego staple. More than two decades after a couple surfer kids named Peter Johnson and Dave Murphey opened the first location across the street from the rolling waves from which the restaurant gets its name, they opened a second in Carlsbad's village. Even without the ocean to gaze at, the restaurant scores on eye appeal with an interior designed to simulate an outdoor island paradise.
The fish tacos are still their main draw, and few around town match that great flavor and quality. Ricardo's Garlic Fish Special is also a perennial favorite: The butter and white wine sauce nicely compliment the mahi mahi's delicate flavor. Many of the dishes are aimed at a health-conscious, beach-going clientele. After all, surfers need to look good on their boards.
